THE WINE
The Champagne Brut 'Clos des Goisses' by Philipponnat is a vintage made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. It comes from a 5.5-hectare vineyard surrounded by walls: one of the rare 'clos' in the region, the oldest and steepest (45°) in Champagne. Exceptional soil, partial vinification in wood, and prolonged aging for about 10 years. An absolutely unique wine.
THE MAISON
The Philipponnat maison, universally recognized as one of the most important Champagne houses, was founded in 1522 in Mareuil-sur-Ay. This maison had the privilege of being a supplier to the King of France Louis XIV and, over the centuries, has maintained a role of international prominence. The village of Mareuil, practically a single street dotted with small vignerons, is located in the center of Champagne, at the point where the three major regions into which the area is divided meet: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, and Cote des Blancs.
Philipponnat owns 20 hectares of vineyards located, besides Mareuil, also in the municipalities of Ay, Mutigny, and Avenay, all beautifully south-facing. The excellence of the vineyards is represented by the Clos des Goisses: 5.5 hectares of vineyard so suited that it allows for the production of a vintage even in the least favorable years. The term “goisses” is the feminine of “gois,” meaning “very difficult to work,” indeed the slope ranging from 30° to 45° makes it impossible to use agricultural machinery, so all the work done in the “clos” is carried out manually, as in past centuries. From this small vineyard comes a historic label of the maison that has become very famous in Italy also because it was the favorite of Gianni Agnelli. Pierre Philipponnat purchased this wonderful vineyard in 1935 from the Visconti d’Ay family and today it is considered a treasure of inestimable value.
Today Charles Philipponnat, heir to this glorious family tradition, with great passion and expertise continues the work of his predecessors to uphold the name and prestige of the maison. The unique and inimitable style of the maison is the result of centuries of savoir faire both in the vineyard and in the cellar, which includes careful and meticulous vineyard management, linked to a deep environmental sensitivity, and a vast heritage of reserve wines aged in wood using the solera method. Thus, Philipponnat Champagnes are born, known worldwide, among the best interpreters of the type.
