Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo: the noble grape variety of Piedmont

The Nebbiolo, considered one of Italy's most prestigious grape varieties, finds its ideal home in the hills of Piedmont. With a history that fades into the mists of time, the Nebbiolo is the beating heart of some of the world's most famous and respected wines, including Barolo and Barbaresco. Its name, said to derive from the word 'nebbia' (fog), could refer to either the autumn mist that envelops the vineyards during harvest or the characteristic bloom that covers the berries.

This native grape variety is known for its extraordinary ability to express the terroir, making each bottle a unique reflection of its origin. It prefers hilly terrain, well-exposed and rich in limestone, which gives the grapes a complex structure and unparalleled finesse. Producing Nebbiolo requires patience and expertise, as its grapes ripen late and benefit from long aging both in cask and bottle.

The organoleptic profile of Nebbiolo is fascinating and complex. These red wines are distinguished by their garnet color with orange reflections, displaying in the glass an aromatic bouquet rich with notes of rose, violet, ripe cherry, sweet spices, and a delicate hint of truffle. On the palate, the Nebbiolo offers an enveloping experience, with firm tannins and vibrant freshness, which evolve into an elegant and persistent structure. Its natural acidity makes it a perfect companion for aging, developing an aromatic complexity over the years that fascinates connoisseurs.

The versatility of Nebbiolo is also expressed through its various denominations of origin, each with unique characteristics. Barolo, often referred to as the 'king of wines', is renowned for its power and longevity, while Barbaresco, its 'younger brother', enchants with its elegance and grace. No less fascinating are the Nebbiolo wines from the Langhe, which offer younger and more accessible interpretations of this noble grape variety.
