Mazzei

In the enchanting scenery of the Tuscan hills, where history and nature intertwine, emerges the legendary winery Mazzei. With over six centuries of winemaking tradition in the heart of Chianti Classico, the Mazzei family represents a pillar of Tuscan viticulture, skillfully combining the richness of the past with the innovation of the present.
The territory that hosts their vineyards is a true masterpiece of nature. Here, on the gentle Tuscan hills, Sangiovese finds its purest expression, accompanied by the noble Cabernet Sauvignon. Thanks to a deep knowledge of the terroir and a passion passed down through generations, the Mazzei have managed to create wines that are true ambassadors of the quality and elegance of Chianti Classico.
The winery's production philosophy is a perfect balance between tradition and experimentation. This constant pursuit of excellence is reflected in prestigious projects such as Siepi, a wine that embodies the art of blending and the ability to innovate without ever betraying its roots. The Ser Lapo, on the other hand, is a tribute to the family history and the unbreakable bond with the territory, a Chianti Classico that encapsulates all the passion and dedication of the Mazzei family.
Every label signed by Mazzei is an invitation to discover the extraordinary beauty of Tuscan wines, a sensory journey through the history and identity of a unique land. THE WINE
The 'Ser Lapo' by Mazzei is an important Riserva of Chianti Classico with which the Marchesi Mazzei want to celebrate their illustrious ancestor Ser Lapo, who is credited with the first known document on the use of the denomination 'Chianti'. 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot, hand-harvested. The wine ages for 12 months in small French oak barrels. Pleasantly structured and intense.
THE COMPANY
The Marchesi Mazzei family boasts an unparalleled heritage steeped in Tuscan winemaking tradition. Their story begins many centuries ago, in the medieval village of Castello di Fonterutoli, and continues for 24 generations. A village, Fonterutoli, that overlooks the Val d’Elsa, which has belonged to the Mazzei family since 1435, still retains its original appearance as a quiet countryside village: a few houses, the church of San Miniato, and the villa built at the end of the 1500s in place of the fortified castle.
The estate is located a few kilometers south of Castellina, in the heart of Chianti Classico, and encompasses over six hundred hectares of land, of which more than one hundred are planted with vineyards situated in the most beautiful areas of the denomination: Fonterutoli, Siepi, Badiola, Belvedere, and Caggio. Vineyards that have made the history of Chianti Classico, primarily cultivated with Sangiovese, a variety that has found its ideal land here, capable of expressing great aromas and elegance in the higher areas, and structure and power in the lower ones. It is no coincidence that Castello di Fonterutoli is considered one of the most significant estates in all of Chianti Classico, always aimed at seeking new qualitative frontiers, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. A work and a path that have led the wines of the Castle to be renowned worldwide, constituting a reference point for all of Chianti Classico.
But it doesn't end here: the propensity for seeking new challenges and the continuous pursuit of excellence have driven the Mazzei to expand their horizons towards new frontiers in viticulture and winemaking, beyond Chianti Classico, also in the Tuscan Maremma, with Tenuta Belguardo, and in Sicily with Tenuta Zisola. These realities today produce wines with a clear territorial imprint, true ambassadors of their respective denominations.
