Cottanera

In the magical setting of Mount Etna, where the land tells ancient stories of lava and fire, lies the winery Cottanera, a wine gem of Sicily. Here, the wild and untamed nature of Etna meets the skilled hands of the winemakers, giving life to wines that are the very essence of this unique and fascinating territory. Cottanera, with its passion for viticulture, has quickly established itself as one of the most solid and promising realities of Etna, celebrated for its ability to combine precision, freshness, and a strong territorial identity.
The production philosophy of Cottanera is a hymn to tradition, but with an eye on the future. The winery embraces sustainable viticulture, respecting the volcanic nature of the soils and enhancing the peculiarities of the indigenous grape varieties of the area. Nerello Mascalese and Carricante are the varieties that dominate the vineyards, cultivated with care and dedication, to best express the minerality and complexity of the Etnean terroir.
Among the main labels, the Etna Rosso Contrada Zottorinotto stands out, a wine that embodies the elegance and structure typical of Nerello Mascalese, with aromatic notes that evoke berries, spices, and an unmistakable hint of flint. Each sip is a sensory journey through the slopes of Etna, an experience that tells of breathtaking landscapes and winemaking traditions passed down from generation to generation.

THE COMPANY

Included among the most important companies in the Etna area today, both in terms of size and significance, Cottanera is a wine-growing reality that started as a hazelnut grove in the early 1960s, thanks to the efforts of the grandfather of the current owners, Francesco Cambria.
We are at an altitude of about seven hundred meters above sea level, in the Catanese municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, in a beautiful area on the northern slope of the volcano, characterized by a particularly fertile agricultural landscape, an ideal condition for the conversion to vineyards that began in the early 1970s and continued decisively in the 1990s. It was during that period that all the plots underwent progressive modernization, with the introduction of also international varieties, and it was also at that time that the estate reached its current one hundred hectares, of which approximately 65 are currently planted with vineyards.
Among the rows, the indigenous varieties of carricante, nerello mascalese, and inzolia grow alongside syrah, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot grapes. Vines cultivated with full respect for nature, the environment, and the ecosystem produce precious fruits, authentic, rich, and concentrated in every organoleptic nuance. Bunches that in the winery are interpreted in the spirit of the oldest local traditions, enhancing and valuing everything that the territory and the season have created.
Those produced today by the winery in Castiglione di Sicilia are wines with a distinctive modern character, both fascinating and elegant in revealing their unmistakable Sicilian soul.
