Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé 2016 from Château de Ferrand is an elegant and intense red wine that perfectly reflects the tradition of the terroir. It is the flagship wine of the winery, a prestigious bottle born on the limestone plateau of Saint-Hippolyte, at 100 meters above sea level, with parcels fermented separately to enhance the individual expressions of the soil. The harmonious blend combines the fruity softness of Merlot with the freshness and tension of Cabernet Franc, enriched by a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The vinification takes place in temperature-controlled cement tanks, followed by aging for 14-18 months in French oak barrels (40% new). On the nose, it releases a refined bouquet with small berries, sweet spices, and medicinal herbs. The palate is intense and structured, with velvety tannins and a long and fresh finish. Great aging potential.

Chateau de Ferrand

In the heart of the famous Saint-Émilion appellation, Château de Ferrand represents one of the most fascinating and historic realities of the Bordeaux landscape. Founded in the early 18th century by Elie De Bétoulaud, a brilliant lawyer, poet, and patron, as well as an intimate friend of the Sun King, the estate was established with the ambition of emulating the sumptuous atmosphere of the Palace of Versailles. A dream that took shape among refined architectures, underground galleries, and an expanse of land that still enchants today.
In 1978, the entry of the Bich family, famous for creating the Bic empire, marked a new era for Ferrand. After the baron's death, the property remained firmly in the hands of his family, today represented by Pauline Bich Chandon-Moët and her husband Philippe Chandon-Moët, heirs of two great names in French tradition. Since 2010, they have initiated an ambitious renewal plan: replanting the vineyards based on ampelographic studies, selecting the clones most suitable for the terroir, adopting sustainable viticultural practices, and expanding the infrastructure with custom vats for selected plots.
In 2012, thanks to this forward-looking vision, Château de Ferrand was awarded the title of Saint-Émilion Grand cru Classé. The property now extends over 42 hectares, 32 of which are planted with Merlot (70%), Cabernet Franc (29%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (1%), cultivated with artisanal care and innovative spirit.

Address:
Allée de Saint-Poly, Saint-Hippolyte, 33330 Saint-Émilion, France
Color: intense ruby red, almost impenetrable, with violet reflections on the nail that confirm its youthfulness and liveliness. The brightness of the wine denotes a good phenolic extraction and careful winemaking.
Bouquet: deep and layered. It opens with notes of ripe black fruits like blackberry, plum, and blackcurrant, followed by hints of black cherry. Next, sweet spicy aromas of vanilla and cloves emerge, due to aging in barriques, accompanied by hints of cocoa, blonde tobacco, and a slight mineral touch. The overall impression is elegant and complex, with continuous evolution in the glass.
Taste: structured and powerful, with well-present tannins that are finely chiseled, providing strength without excess. The sip is full and consistent with the nose, featuring a nice fruity and spicy return. The balanced acidity and well-integrated alcohol ensure excellent overall harmony. The finish is long, with notes of graphite, licorice, and black fruits in jam.

THE ESTATE

The history of the Château de Ferrand winery dates back to the early 18th century, founded by Elie De Bétoulaud, a lawyer, poet, and patron, who was a close friend of King Louis XIV. In an effort to recreate the atmosphere of the Palace of Versailles, he constructed and founded Chateau De Ferrand, which consisted of various rooms, tunnels, and hectares of land; passed down through generations until 1978.
In that year, Baron Bich purchased the Château de Ferrand, which, despite his death shortly after, remained in the family’s possession, and today it is still owned by Pauline Bich Chandon-Moët along with her husband Philippe Chandon-Moët. Together, they manage this Chateau with ambitious projects; in fact, since 2010, the Château de Ferrand has undergone significant renovations; the vineyard is being restored and replanted after careful ampelographic study of the soils and an adaptation of the grape varieties to the terroir. The cultivation methods are being redesigned as well as the winemaking buildings; the cellars are being modernized, and the vats increased and adapted to allow for better management of the plots.
In 2012, the family's commitment bore fruit: Ferrand became a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé. Today, the estate spans a total of 42 hectares, of which 32 are under the designation and classification of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé. The cultivated grape varieties are: Merlot 70%, Cabernet Franc 29%, and Cabernet Sauvignon 1%.
