Cottanera

In the magical setting of Mount Etna, where the land tells ancient stories of lava and fire, lies the Cottanera winery, an enological gem of Sicily. Here, the wild and untamed nature of Etna meets the skilled hands of the winemakers, creating wines that embody the very essence of this unique and fascinating territory. Cottanera, with its passion for viticulture, has quickly established itself as one of the most solid and promising entities of Etna, celebrated for its ability to combine precision, freshness, and a strong territorial identity.
The production philosophy of Cottanera is a tribute to tradition, but with an eye towards the future. The winery embraces sustainable viticulture, respecting the volcanic nature of the soils and enhancing the peculiarities of the native grapes of the area. Nerello mascalese and Carricante are the varieties that dominate the vineyards, cultivated with care and dedication, to best express the minerality and complexity of the Etnean terroir.
Among the main labels, the Etna Rosso Contrada Zottorinotto stands out, a wine that embodies the elegance and typical structure of Nerello mascalese, with aromatic notes that evoke berries, spices, and a distinctive touch of flint. Each sip is a sensory journey among the slopes of Etna, an experience that tells of breathtaking landscapes and wine traditions passed down from generation to generation.
We invite every enthusiast to discover on Vino45 the extraordinary labels of Cottanera, an opportunity to immerse yourself in the volcanic magic of Etna and be seduced by wines of rare authenticity and character.

THE WINE
The Etna Rosso by Cottanera is a pure Nerello Mascalese, a wine that showcases floral aromas. It is made from vines that are about 30 years old, located at approximately 700 m s.l.m.. THE COMPANY

Among those that are today the most important, also in terms of size, companies in the Etna area, Cottanera is a winemaking reality that started as a hazelnut farm in the early 1960s, thanks to the efforts of the grandfather of the current owners, Francesco Cambria.
We are at an altitude of about seven hundred meters above sea level, in the Sicilian municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, in a beautiful area on the northern slope of the volcano, characterized by a territory particularly suited for agriculture, an ideal condition for the conversion to vineyard that began in the early 1970s and continued decisively in the 1990s. It was during that period that all the plots saw a progressive modernization, with the introduction of even international varieties, and it was also at that time that the estate reached its current hundred hectares, of which about 65 are currently planted with vineyards.
Among the rows, the indigenous varieties of carricante, nerello mascalese, and inzolia grow alongside syrah, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot grapes. Vines cultivated in full respect of nature, environment, and ecosystem produce precious, honest, rich, and concentrated fruits in every organoleptic nuance. Bunches that in the winery are interpreted in the spirit of the oldest local traditions, enhancing and valuing everything that the territory and the season have created.
The wines produced today by the winery in Castiglione di Sicilia have a pronounced modern character, being both fascinating and elegant in revealing their unmistakable Sicilian soul.
