THE WINE
The cru Etna Rosso 'Contrada Feudo di Mezzo' by Cottanera is born from the rows of Nerello Mascalese that flow from the volcanic slopes of Etna down to the valley of the icy Alcantara river. The strong temperature variation and the volcanic and alluvial soils allow for a Red that is perfectly balanced between aromaticity and structure. A fresh and fragrant wine, capable of faithfully expressing the characteristics of such a complex grape variety as Nerello: a long-lived wine with dense tannins, of great longevity.
THE COMPANY
Among the most important, also in terms of size, companies in the Etna area, Cottanera is a wine-growing reality that started as a hazelnut grove in the early 1960s, thanks to the work of the grandfather of the current owners, Francesco Cambria.
We are at an altitude of about seven hundred meters above sea level, in the Catanese municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, in a beautiful area on the northern slope of the volcano, characterized by a territory particularly suited for agriculture, an ideal condition for the conversion to vineyard that began in the early 1970s and continued decisively in the 1990s. It was during this period that all the plots saw a gradual modernization, with the introduction of even international varieties, and it is also during this time that the company has reached its current hundred hectares, of which about 65 are currently planted with vineyards.
Among the rows, the native varieties of carricante, nerello mascalese, and inzolia grow alongside syrah, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot grapes. Vines cultivated in full respect of nature, the environment, and the ecosystem produce precious, pure, rich, and concentrated fruits in every organoleptic nuance. Bunches that in the cellar are interpreted in the light of the oldest local traditions, enhancing and valuing everything that the territory and the season have created.
Those produced today by the winery in Castiglione di Sicilia are wines with a distinct modern character, both fascinating and elegant in revealing their unmistakable Sicilian soul.
