'Salivolpe' by San Leonino is a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, that is, the 'selection' of the best Sangiovese grapes in certain exclusive vintages. The name ‘Salivolpe’ refers to the first Etruscan denomination of Castellina in Chianti, and the ‘stars’ on the label reflect the frescoed ceiling of the Church of San Leonino. A Chianti that knows how to keep history and modernity united and coherent.

San Leonino

In the enchanting Tuscan landscape, where the hills are colored with the hues of the sun and wine, lies the historic winery San Leonino. Nestled in the heart of Chianti, this winery is a bastion of the region's winemaking tradition, expressing the authentic essence of Chianti Classico through its wines. The beauty of the land is reflected in the rows of vines, which for centuries have told stories of passion and dedication to the art of winemaking.
The winery is strongly tied to a production philosophy that focuses on classicism and fidelity to the terroir. The grape varieties grown, primarily Sangiovese and Merlot, are tended with meticulous care to create wines that embody the balance and richness characteristic of the DOCG Chianti Classico designation. The production approach of San Leonino is a tribute to tradition, with a keen eye on innovation that allows the intrinsic qualities of Tuscan grapes to be best expressed.
Among the standout labels, the Chianti Classico Riserva is a true symbol of elegance and complexity. This wine is a sensory journey that opens with intense aromas of cherry and spices, followed by a velvety structure and a persistent finish that captivates the senses. Each sip is a tribute to the Tuscan winemaking tradition, capable of telling ancient stories with a modern and refined language.

THE WINE
'Salivolpe' by San Leonino is a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, which means the 'selection' of the best Sangiovese grapes in certain exclusive vintages. The name ‘Salivolpe’ refers to the first Etruscan denomination of Castellina in Chianti and the ‘stars’ on the label are inspired by the frescoed ceiling of the Church of San Leonino. A Chianti that knows how to keep history and modernity united and coherent.
THE COMPANY
The Fattoria di San Leonino has been producing wine since the Church from which it takes its name and to which it belonged became part of the Chianti League.
The piviere of San Leonino in Conio (the collection of lands annexed to the church) is mentioned in various documents, the earliest dating back to 1043, 1076, and 1077. At that time it was part of the diocese of Fiesole, but being located on the border between Florence, Siena, and Volterra, it was always at the center of disputes for control. Especially since the Farm annexed to the Village and located in a strategic area, on a hill washed by the Staggia stream and the Gena ditch, enjoyed a very prosperous economic situation, as evidenced by the “tithes” paid between 1275 and 1300.
At the end of all the territorial disputes between Florence and Siena, the church definitively entered the Florentine state and became one of the cornerstones of the Chianti League, as stated in the statute of 1384.
In the last 50 years, various commercial properties have succeeded one another. Until the arrival in 1994 of the Angelini family, the current owners of the Bertani Domains winery group, of which San Leonino is a part.
The first bottle of Chianti Classico that we find on the market is from 1973.
San Leonino today covers a total area of 100 hectares, of which 52 are cultivated with vineyards and 6 with olive groves. The company is located in the municipality of Castellina in Chianti, near the small medieval village that arises around the Romanesque Church of San Leonino, from which it takes its name and logo (which is the stylized reproduction of the tip of the bell tower, where the bell is housed).
