The Gruner Veltliner 'Kalkvogel' by Zillinger is a pure Grüner Veltliner produced in Weinviertel, Styria, in the northeast of Lower Austria. The vineyards are 10-25 years old, and the production is strictly organic. A white wine with a distinctly Austrian character: fresh, mineral, based on one of the most iconic grape varieties of this nation, the Veltliner. The Kalkvogel is a version aged for 1 year in acacia barrels. On the nose, citrus notes meet hints of toasting along with typical nuances of wet stone. The palate is tense, with great freshness and salinity. An exuberant and very energetic wine, a perfect example of a very fascinating terroir. Total production 2,500 bottles.

Herbert Zillinger

In the picturesque landscape of the Weinviertel, one of the most fascinating wine regions in Austria, the winery Herbert Zillinger stands as a beacon of innovation and passion. Here, among the rolling hills and vineyards that stretch as far as the eye can see, Zillinger has carved out a prominent role in the natural wine scene, embracing a production philosophy that prioritizes the purity and complexity of flavors.
The Weinviertel region is renowned for its ability to produce white wines of extraordinary intensity, thanks to a unique microclimate and particularly suited soils. It is in this context that Herbert Zillinger diligently cultivates his vineyards, primarily Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, two varieties that lend themselves beautifully to expressing the territorial peculiarities. His obsessive attention to detail and respect for nature are reflected in every phase of the production process, from vineyard to cellar.
Among the standout labels, Radikal and Reflexion emerge as true works of oenological art. The Radikal, with its bold structure and enveloping aromas, embodies the distinct character of Grüner Veltliner, while the Reflexion, with its fresh and vibrant notes, offers a refined interpretation of Riesling. These wines are not just beverages, but sensory experiences that tell a story of land, sun, and skilled hands.

THE COMPANY

Herbert Zillinger is located in Ebenthal (district of Gänserndorf) in the Weinviertel (Lower Austria) - the most productive wine region in Austria with 15,800 hectares of vineyards. The soil is marl-limestone with the presence of gneiss rocks, granite, sandstone, and typical loess sediments (a layer of fine sand similar to silt composed of silicates, quartz, feldspar, mica, and other minerals). The climate is continental for temperature and oceanic for humidity, with relatively low average annual temperatures (9-10°C) and sustained precipitation (400-600 mm). All these factors give the wines great elegance, minerality, acidity, and aromatic complexity. The characteristics that distinguish the winery are: high quality and production diversity (indigenous varieties such as Gruener Veltliner and Traminer are favored) and cultivation conducted according to organic farming practices.
