The Santorini PDO Assyrtiko 2020 from Argyros Estate comes from the native Greek grape of Santorini, where vines are grown in woven baskets to protect them from wind and the volcanic soil’s drought. This white, with high natural acidity, typical of the variety and terroir, ensures longevity and aging potential. Fermentation takes place in both steel and wood, softening the acidity and creating balance. The nose shows a citrus bouquet with lemon, pineapple, and green apple, while the palate is mineral, fresh, and persistent. It pairs well with Greek cuisine, grilled fish, shellfish, mollusks, and white meats, highlighting Mediterranean flavors.

THE COMPANY

Estate Argyros was founded in 1903 by Georgios Argyros, with a vineyard of only 5 hectares located in Santorini. Georgios produced his wines according to the traditional method of Santorini and mainly sold them in the local market. In 1950, Estate Argyros was passed on to Matthew Argyros, who not only continued his father's business but also expanded the family vineyard to nearly 7 hectares. The person who, however, most significantly changed the image of the winery was the founder's grandson, Yiannis Argyros, who has managed it since 1974. Yiannis not only extended the vineyard area to the current 65 hectares but also worked hard to combine family tradition with modern technology and to ensure the high quality of the grapes. Matthew, Yiannis's son, today represents the fourth generation of the Argyros family. Faithful to the principles of his ancestors, he combines tradition with innovation, working hard for the future of the company. The vineyard is located in Episkopi Gonia Thiras. The soil is volcanic and the vines are cultivated on their own rootstock. The Argyros winery owns one of the oldest vineyards on the island: some plots are over 150 years old. Argyros Estate cultivates and vinifies only the indigenous varieties of Santorini, such as Assyrtiko, Athiri, Aidani, Mandilaria, Mavrathiro, Mavrotragano, and Voudomato.
