The Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 'Fosso Cancelli' by Ciavolich was born in 2007 from a strong desire to create a wine of great craftsmanship and tradition. The name refers to the ditch that marks the boundaries of the oldest vineyards of the estate in Loreto Aprutino, where the Montepulciano grapes are selected and harvested. The hand-picked grapes are pressed in the ancient wine press. Spontaneous fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts without temperature control. It rests for 1 year in the fermentation concrete tanks. It matures for at least 3 years in bottle. It presents itself as powerful, characterful, and remarkably balanced, with an intense color, red with slight garnet reflections, aromas of sour cherry, undergrowth, and resin, and flavors of jam and licorice. Ideal with red meats, aged cheeses, and earthy first courses. Approximately 6,000 numbered bottles are produced.

Ciavolich

In the heart of the Abruzzo wine region, among sun-kissed hills and breezes descending from the Gran Sasso to meet the Adriatic Sea, lies the winery Ciavolich, a reality deeply connected to its history and territory. The origins of the family date back to the 16th century when the Ciavolich, wool merchants of Bulgarian origin, settled in Miglianico, beginning an agricultural tradition destined to last for centuries.
It was in 1853 that the first family winery was established, built to vinify the grapes grown on their owned lands. Today, this long legacy is in the hands of Chiara Ciavolich, who leads the company with passion, elegance, and a contemporary vision, renewing the commitment to authentic and quality viticulture every day.
The beating heart of the estate is now located in Contrada Salmacina, in Loreto Aprutino, in one of the most vocated areas of Abruzzo for vine cultivation. Here, at an altitude of 250 meters, the vineyards enjoy an ideal climate: mild, bright, constantly ventilated, and with marked temperature variations. The clay, loamy, and sandy soils provide perfect conditions for the maturation of healthy bunches, rich in aromas and structure.
Among the rows, the grape varieties symbolizing Abruzzo's identity are cultivated: the intense and vibrant Montepulciano, the fresh and harmonious Trebbiano, and the Pecorino, an ancient variety now rediscovered for its aromaticity and minerality. Each label tells the story of a generous land and a family that has preserved its soul for over 150 years.
Vino45 is proud to offer the wines of Ciavolich, to provide its customers with an authentic journey through the hills of Abruzzo, where history, territory, and passion blend in every glass.

THE COMPANY

Ciavolich is a family-run business that has been cultivating vineyards in Abruzzo for several generations. The family history is very ancient. Wool merchants of Bulgarian origin, the Ciavolich arrived in Italy during the 16th century and settled in the town of Miglianico. The first winery was established in 1853 to vinify grapes from their own lands. Over the generations, the estate has expanded, especially in the wonderful area of Loreto Aprutino. Today, the estate is managed by Chiara, who carries on the family tradition with passion and expertise. The core of the company has moved to Loreto Aprutino, in Contrada Salmacina, in one of the most vocated areas for viticulture in Abruzzo, in a hilly area at 250 meters above sea level, a few kilometers from the Gran Sasso massif and the Calderone glacier, as well as from the Adriatic coast. The climate is mild and sunny, very bright, and always breezy, with significant temperature fluctuations between day and night. The soils are clayey and loamy, with some sandy presence, very suitable for high-quality viticulture. In these favorable conditions, the vines produce perfectly healthy clusters, with rich and intense aromas. Among the rows, historic grape varieties cultivated in the area are grown, particularly Pecorino, Trebbiano, and Montepulciano.
