The 'Montiano' is the flagship product of the Famiglia Cotarella, acclaimed since its inception as one of the greatest and most innovative Italian reds. It is the result of a blend of Merlot grapes planted by grafting experts from Montpellier in a land traditionally suited to white grape varieties. In the hills of Lazio, Merlot reaches an extraordinary level of ripeness, subsequently expressing itself in wines of the highest elegance, perfectly balanced and of remarkable pleasantness. This particular wine comes from an old low-yield vineyard, where the selection process has been more rigorous. It is allowed to mature for at least a year in French oak barrels. Soft and balanced, it is capable of surprising even several years after the harvest.

Cotarella

In the picturesque crossroads between Lazio and Umbria, where tradition meets innovation, the Cotarella winery comes to life. Born from the creative flair of a family of world-renowned oenologists, with Riccardo Cotarella at the helm, this wine reality has become a point of reference for those seeking elegant and modern wines, capable of captivating the most demanding palates internationally.
Immersed in the lush hilly landscapes of these two Italian regions, Cotarella has been able to capture the essence of the territory, producing wines that celebrate the IGP Umbria and Lazio denominations. The varieties of grapes cultivated, from Grechetto to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, reflect a wise combination of local tradition and openness to the most appreciated international varieties. These grapes, nurtured with passion and respect for the environment, give rise to wines that stand out for their distinctive character and uncompromising quality.
Among the flagship labels of the winery, Montiano and Sodale stand out as authentic expressions of the Cotarella style. Montiano, with its complexity and aromatic depth, reveals itself as a wine of great charm and structure, while Sodale enchants with its elegance and softness, representing a perfect balance between tradition and modernity.
We invite all enthusiasts to discover the Cotarella labels on Vino45, a sensory journey through the hills of Lazio and Umbria, where every sip tells a story of passion, innovation, and respect for the land.

THE WINE
The 'Montiano' is the flagship product of the Famiglia Cotarella, acclaimed since its inception as one of the greatest and most innovative Italian reds. It is the result of a blend of Merlot grapes planted by grafting experts from Montpellier in land traditionally suited for white grape varieties. In the Lazio hills, Merlot reaches an extraordinary level of ripeness, expressing itself in highly elegant wines that are perfectly balanced and remarkably pleasant. This particular wine comes from an old low-yield vineyard, where the selection was more rigorous. It is aged for at least a year in French oak barrels. Soft and balanced, it is capable of surprising even years after the harvest.
THE COMPANY
The bond between the Cotarella Family and the world of wine originated in the 1960s when Antonio and Domenico Cotarella, grape growers in Monterubiaglio, a fraction of the municipality of Castel Viscardo in the province of Terni, built the first winery for their own wine production. The brothers Renzo and Riccardo Cotarella, both enologists raised in a land of long wine traditions, motivated by their father Domenico's passion, founded the current “Falesco” in 1979, transforming what was a small family business into a successful wine company to be passed on to future generations.
It is here, at the crossroads of Umbria and Lazio, that undeniably charming wines are born, characterized by a contemporary style and at the same time marked by a particular longevity. Wines that in just a few decades have become ambassadors of Italian winemaking around the world.
The company currently covers a vineyard area of about 280 hectares, to which an additional ninety hectares are rented. In a hilly area characterized by volcanic soils, both native varieties and international grapes are cultivated, so among the rows can be found plants of aleatico, trebbiano, malvasia, verdicchio, sangiovese, and vermentino, as well as merlot, syrah, viognier, and cabernet. Grapes are cultivated in full respect of the environment and ecosystem, which in the winery are processed using the most modern and advanced enological tools, always employed without ever distorting what the terroir and the season have allowed to express in the fruit.
