The 'Margherita Barbero' by Luigi Spertino is one of the most engaging and emotional expressions of the well-known Piedmontese grape variety, Grignolino. It is produced with pure grapes from two beautiful plots located in Mombercelli and Portocomaro. The grapes are strictly hand-picked and undergo spontaneous alcoholic fermentation in steel. It is then aged in terracotta amphorae for 12 months. The color is light red with a tendency towards pink. A complex and refined red wine, with hints of dog rose, black pepper, and crunchy small red fruits. On the palate, it is deep and smooth, fresh, spicy, and floral. Excellent.

Luigi Spertino

In the enchanted lands of Monferrato, a corner of Piedmont that preserves centuries-old traditions and breathtaking landscapes, stands the Luigi Spertino winery. Here, among gentle hills and vineyards that seem painted, the Spertino family perpetuates a winemaking legacy rooted in a passion for the land and wine. This small family-run winery is a hidden treasure, known among connoisseurs for its ability to bottle the authentic spirit of the territory.
The Luigi Spertino winery is distinguished by the production of two denominations that speak the language of Monferrato: DOC Barbera and Grignolino. The rigor and dedication with which the Barbera and Grignolino grapes are cultivated are reflected in every bottle, telling stories of tradition and authenticity. Each bunch is meticulously cared for, following an approach that embraces genuineness and respect for nature, without compromise.
Among the standout labels, the Barbera Vignassa emerges as a true oenological gem. This wine embodies the very essence of Monferrato, with vibrant notes and a decisive character that captivate at the first sip. It is a wine that not only accompanies a meal but becomes the protagonist of a unique sensory experience, capable of evoking the energy and intensity of the territory from which it originates.

THE WINE
The 'Margherita Barbero' by Luigi Spertino is one of the most engaging and emotional expressions of the famous Piedmontese grape variety, Grignolino. Produced with pure grapes from two beautiful parcels located respectively in Mombercelli and Portocomaro. Grapes are strictly hand-harvested and undergo spontaneous alcoholic fermentation in steel. It then ages in terracotta amphorae for 12 months. Light red color tending towards pink. A complex and refined red wine, with hints of dog rose, black pepper, and crunchy red berries. On the palate, it is deep and smooth, fresh, spicy, and floral. Excellent.
Luigi Spertino and then Mauro Spertino, a family tradition that has continued for generations in the name of enhancing the Grignolino grape in the land of Monferrato. We are in the Astigiano, in the small municipality of Mombercelli, where since 1977 Luigi has officially produced (because before it was sold in bulk) characterful and high-quality wines, the result of sustainable and laborious viticulture. Deeply tied to his land, a master of ancient farming practices and an unstoppable winemaker, at over 90 years old he supports his son Mauro, today the soul and heir of this small standout reality in the Piedmontese landscape. However, Luigi's work does not stop, and even if he cannot physically participate in vineyard activities, he watches with a big smile as his son works and gets emotional when he sees the first bunch of grapes at each harvest. Mauro, just like his father, is a curious, humble, and competent man; his wines attest to his abilities in the cellar.
The vineyards of Luigi Spertino are located in Mandorle on grassy soils characterized by a steep slope. The body is divided into two slopes with different exposures. On one side are the old Barbera vineyards facing west, and on the other are the young rows of Pinot Noir also looking west. Additionally, besides the steep Cortese vineyards, there are extraordinary Grignolino parcels, one officially purchased in Mombercelli and another very suitable in the historic sandy area of Portacomaro. All operations are carried out manually, with no tractors, to prevent the soil from becoming too compact and dense. Even in the cellar, Mauro has chosen a respectful and minimally invasive approach that aims only to let the grape juice gently transform into wine.
The wines reflect the entire peasant soul of these lands and the respectful and artisanal work of the Spertino family. Expressions of character and personality, simple landscape portraits that recall the taste of ancient tradition and pay homage to the place where they come to life. A limited production that stands out among the hills of Monferrato, the land of Barbera, for the timeless Grignolino wine, a classic of the tradition that manages to smooth all the rough edges of the variety and bring to the glass a striking and gentle sip.
