Castellare di Castellina

In the picturesque setting of Tuscany, among gentle hills and ancient villages, lies the winery Castellare di Castellina, a jewel of the Chianti Classico that embodies the quintessence of Tuscan wine tradition. Nestled in the heart of the Chianti region, Castellare di Castellina is a beacon of authenticity and elegance, where respect for indigenous grape varieties is at the center of a production philosophy that celebrates the land and its history.
The vineyards of Castellare thrive on lands that have seen centuries of cultivation, nourished by a rich soil and a favorable climate that give the wines a unique structure and personality. Here, the Sangiovese and Canaiolo grapes are meticulously cultivated, following an approach that prioritizes quality over quantity, enhancing the intrinsic characteristics of these historical varieties.
The winery is especially renowned for its I Sodi di S. Niccolò, a wine that stands as a symbol of Tuscan excellence. This wine is distinguished by its complexity and depth, combining notes of ripe red fruits with delicate earthy hints, all enveloped by velvety tannins that make for an unforgettable tasting experience. Each sip is a sensory journey through the Chianti landscape, a liquid tale of elegance and power.

THE WINE
The 'Poggio ai Merli' by Castellare di Castellina is the most direct demonstration of how Tuscany is an exceptional land for Merlot. It is allowed to rest for up to 30 months in new French oak barrels and is completed with an additional year of aging in glass. It is a Merlot that rightly belongs to the list of the greatest reds of the Peninsula. Of great structure and personality, it was first vinified with the 1999 vintage, and from the outset, it has established itself as a sort of "symbolic monument" of excellence wines. It is an exceptional Merlot. Limited edition, numbered bottles.
THE COMPANY
A historic company of Chianti Classico, Castellare di Castellina was established in its current form in 1968 thanks to the merger of 5 different estates. A magical place where the vineyards, totaling 33 hectares, are perfectly integrated into the environment, among woods and other crops. An area where excellent exposure, good water drainage, mixed soils of limestone marls, galestro, and little clay have always produced well-structured, intense wines suitable for long aging in bottles. The winery has been owned since the late 1970s by entrepreneur Paolo Panerai, who immediately began a long research process aimed at improving all the labels. A careful census of the vines, undertaken immediately after the purchase, has allowed for the selection of the best Sangiovese species for the Sodi di San Niccolò, the company's symbolic wine. Moreover, an experimental plot planted on the property in collaboration with the Universities of Milan and Florence and the Institute of San Michele all'Adige allows for continuous research on the best clones as well as the production of selected vines for renewing the vineyards. The world of Castellare di Castellina has grown over time; in 2004, in partnership with Les Domaines Baron de Rothschild-Lafite, Rocca di Frassinello was born in the heart of Maremma. A splendid estate along the Tuscan coast where the best of Italy and France meet; a place where Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Shiraz find their home in perfect harmony, leading to the birth of wines of undeniable charm, intensity, and elegance. Reds that immediately resonate with a highly heterogeneous audience and whose project finds completion with the construction of the new winery, a project designed by Renzo Piano. However, Paolo Panerai's adventure in the wine world does not stop at Tuscany alone. It is in Sicily that Feudi del Pisciotto and Gurra di Mare were subsequently established. The first is located between Caltagirone and Piazza Armerina: about forty hectares of vineyards mainly cultivated with Nero d’Avola for a winery characterized by the historic palmento, where wine was already made during the times of the Greeks and Romans. The second near Porto Palo, the ancient port of Selinunte, in one of the richest historical areas of Sicily, a place that produces warm and captivating white wines.
