Bordeaux: Sauternes
Sauternes, a renowned appellation on the left bank of Bordeaux, is famous for its sweet botrytized wines, which are made from grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea (the so-called noble rot). This process concentrates sugars and aromas, making the wine unique in complexity and longevity.
The main grape varieties are Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle, which benefit from the microclimate of the Ciron, favorable for the controlled development of noble rot. The terroir, with gravel, sands, and calcareous clays, contributes aromatic richness and freshness, balancing sweetness and acidity.
The 1855 classification distinguishes "Premier cru Classé" and the exclusive "Premier cru Supérieur" of Château d’Yquem.
