Burgundy: Mâconnais

The Mâconnais, located in the southern part of Burgundy, is a hilly area that benefits from a milder climate and favorable sun exposure. The limestone and clay soils give the wines a balance between freshness and roundness. The absolute protagonist is Chardonnay, which finds one of its most immediate and sunny expressions here.

The designation includes several types:

  • Mâcon and Mâcon-Villages: fresh, fruity wines with a pleasant and versatile drinkability.

  • Communal appellations such as Pouilly-Fuissé, Pouilly-Vinzelles, Pouilly-Loché, and Saint-Véran, which offer greater complexity, depth, and aging potential.

The style is dominated by aromas of white-fleshed fruit, notes of fresh almond, and mineral accents. The best cru of the Mâconnais demonstrate that Chardonnay can express great elegance even outside the more celebrated terroirs of the Côte d’Or.
