The Derthona 'Montecitorio' by Vigneti Massa is a wine of great stature, a deep and incisive white made from pure white grapes. Profound and very broad, with distinct hints of hazelnut, honey, hay, and flint, a typical mineral imprint derived from the combination of grape variety and area. Full and sumptuous taste, with an imposing structure that expands in width but is enlivened by a superb savory finish. Excellent.

Vigneti Massa

In the heart of the Colli Tortonesi, a land of gentle slopes and centuries-old traditions, lies the winery Vigneti Massa. This corner of Piedmont has witnessed a silent revolution, orchestrated by Walter Massa, a pioneer who rediscovered and revitalized a once-forgotten grape variety: Timorasso. Thanks to his vision and commitment, Vigneti Massa not only revived Timorasso but also helped to relaunch the entire Colli Tortonesi region on the international wine scene.
The winery embraces a production philosophy that combines respect for tradition and innovation. Here, the vineyards are tended with meticulousness and dedication, allowing native varieties like Timorasso and Barbera to express themselves at their best, in a unique and evocative terroir. The flagship of the production is undoubtedly the Derthona Timorasso, a wine that embodies the renaissance of this grape variety and is distinguished by its longevity and minerality. These wines, capable of aging gracefully, release complex and deep aromas that tell the story and identity of the Colli Tortonesi.
We invite all wine enthusiasts to discover the extraordinary labels of Vigneti Massa on Vino45. An opportunity to immerse yourself in a sensory journey between tradition, innovation, and the authentic expression of the Piedmontese territory.

THE WINE
The Derthona 'Montecitorio' by Vigneti Massa is a wine of great stature, a deep and incisive white obtained from pure white grapes. Deep and expansive, with distinct hints of hazelnut, honey, hay, and flint, a typical mineral imprint derived from the combination of grape variety and region. Full-bodied and sumptuous, with an imposing structure that expands in width but is invigorated by a savory finish from a champion. Excellent.
THE COMPANY
The Tortonese area, located in the southeastern Piedmont, was once primarily known for wines from red grape varieties, but thanks particularly to the visionary genius of Walter Massa, this area has rediscovered itself as also being a land for whites.
The combination of this producer and the timorasso grape variety has become immediate over the years: Walter Massa is indeed credited with the revival of this ancient native variety, which has been interpreted following a new production philosophy, to the point that Walter Massa is generally recognized as the “Father of Timorasso.” Thanks to his teachings, the entire denomination has benefited, witnessing the birth of new production realities that, following in the master's footsteps, today bring luster and prestige to the entire Colli Tortonesi area. The story of this winemaker and his insight dates back to the early '80s. In 1987, the first production took place, and starting in 2000, Walter Massa began bottling the different crus separately.
In fact, the Massa family boasts a winemaking tradition that dates back precisely to 1879, so the winery “Vigneti Massa” is founded on solid foundations, built on ancient knowledge and deep practical understanding. Currently, the vineyard area that the winery can rely on is about twenty-seven hectares, and among the rows, in addition to timorasso, there are also barbera, freisa, croatina, and moscato plants. The setting is Monleale, in the province of Alessandria: here, arranged like a natural amphitheater near the town square, are the company's owned vineyards, from which all the labels of the winery come to life.
From “Costa del Vento” to “Montecitorio,” from “Derthona” to “Monleale,” including the red wines, all the bottles, the result of Walter Massa's brilliant mind, arise from the deepest enhancement of what is the nature of a territory that, without Walter Massa himself, would have otherwise been little known and abandoned to its fate.
