Antinori

The Antinori Family has been dedicated to wine production for over six hundred years: since 1385, when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri. Throughout its long history, through 26 generations, the family has always directly managed this activity with innovative and sometimes courageous choices, but always maintaining unwavering respect for traditions and the territory.
Today the company is led by Albiera Antinori, with the support of her two sisters Allegra and Alessia, who are personally involved in the company activities. The Marquis Piero Antinori is currently the Honorary President of the company. Tradition, passion, and intuition have been the driving qualities that have led the Marchesi Antinori to establish themselves as one of the leading Italian wine producers. Every vintage, every land, every idea that wants to be implemented is a new beginning, a new search for ever higher quality margins.
As the Marquis Piero likes to say: “the ancient roots play an important role in our philosophy, but they have never inhibited our innovative spirit.” Over time, in addition to the estates in Tuscany and Umbria, which are the family's historical heritage, investments have been made in other areas suitable for quality wine production both in Italy and abroad, where a new path of enhancing new "terroirs" with high wine-growing potential could be undertaken. The Marchesi Antinori expresses its passion for viticulture by seeking ever finer margins of improvement. For this reason, continuous experiments are carried out in vineyards and cellars with selections of clones of native and international grapes, types of cultivation, vineyard altitudes, fermentation methods and temperatures, traditional and modern winemaking techniques, different types of wood, sizes and ages of barrels, and varying the length of bottle aging. "We have demonstrated, over the years, that in Tuscany and Umbria there was the possibility to produce quality wines, recognized internationally, which could show elegance and finesse while always maintaining the original character.
Our library has many titles, but for us, it is not rich enough. We have a mission that is not entirely accomplished, which drives us to express the vast potential of our vineyards and to reconcile the new that remains to be discovered with the heritage of Tuscan taste that includes tradition, culture, agriculture, the artistic and the literary that indeed represent the identity of the Marchesi Antinori, of which one of the major strengths lies in being Tuscan, or, if you prefer, our 'Tuscanity'." Piero Antinori
The Antinori family has been part of PFV, "Premum Familiae Vini," an informal association of family-owned wine companies, since its founding. PFV goes beyond geographical boundaries and maintains a common bond: that of vineyard ownership and wine production as a family activity to be cultivated and refined, like a great wine, over time.

The Tenuta Pian delle Vigne, which is located 6 km south of Montalcino, above the Val d'Orcia, was acquired by Antinori In July 1995. It is named after a characteristic 19th-century railway station located within the estate, still in use today. The total area of the estate is 184 hectares, of which 65 hectares are planted with vineyards, 2 hectares with olive groves, and 117 hectares of forest.
The Vineyards. The total surface area of the Tenuta Pian delle Vigne covers 184 hectares, of which 65 hectares are planted with vineyards, 2 hectares with olive groves, and 117 hectares with forest. The entirety of the vineyards is planted with Sangiovese (locally called "Brunello") the altitude varies from 130 meters s.l.m. At 250 meters, the exposure is predominantly southeast. The soil is predominantly clay and limestone rich in skeleton. About half of the vineyards were planted in 1996-1997, and these plants are now in full balance and yield very high-quality productions; to these "old" plantings, another 33 hectares have been recently established to produce the new wines of the estate using five of the clones of Sangiovese of Montalcino and selections Antinori the best Sangiovese. Due to the temperate climate that characterizes the area, the grapes in Montalcino often ripen one or two weeks earlier than those in the area of Chianti and this allows the harvest to begin in mid-September. Additionally, the particular richness of minerals in the soil makes the wines rich in flavor and elegant in their tannic structure, a quality that is enhanced with aging.
