Morellino di Scansano
In the heart of Tuscany, among the gentle hills of Maremma, a wine is born that embodies the very essence of the territory: Morellino di Scansano. This oenological gem, which earned its controlled and guaranteed designation of origin (DOCG) in 2007, is a tribute to the Tuscan winemaking tradition, with roots that delve into a past rich in history and culture.
Morellino di Scansano owes its name to the term "Morello," which in the local dialect refers to the dark color of the Sangiovese grapes, the main grape variety of this production. Cultivated in an area that extends from the province of Grosseto to the borders of Monte Argentario, this wine reflects the diverse landscape of the area, with vineyards opening onto maritime and mountainous panoramas, caressed by the salty winds of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The production of Morellino di Scansano is an art that combines tradition and innovation. The Sangiovese grapes, which make up at least 85% of the blend, are handpicked in the early hours of the morning, when the freshness of the night preserves the aromas and quality of the fruit. These are supplemented by small percentages of other native or international grape varieties, such as Ciliegiolo, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, which provide the wine with additional nuances of complexity.
Once harvested, the grapes undergo a careful vinification process that includes controlled temperature fermentation and aging that can occur in steel to preserve the freshness of the fruit, or in wood, to enrich the wine with spicy and vanilla notes. The result is a wine with an intense ruby red color, with reflections that tend toward garnet with aging.
The organoleptic profile of Morellino di Scansano is an enveloping sensory experience. The nose reveals intense aromas of ripe red fruit, such as cherry and plum, accompanied by floral hints of violet and a delicate spiciness of black pepper and licorice. On the palate, this wine presents itself as soft and harmonious, with velvety tannins that support its structure and a pleasant acidity that enhances its drinkability. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a pleasant memory of fruit and spices.
Morellino di Scansano is a versatile wine, perfectly pairing with traditional Tuscan dishes, such as pappa al pomodoro, pappardelle with wild boar, or a succulent Florentine steak. However, its elegance and structure also make it suitable for international cuisine dishes, such as beef fillet with green pepper or porcini mushroom risotto.
