The Toscana Rosso 'Schidione' from Tenuta Castello di Montepò, owned by Jacopo Biondi Santi, is produced in the beautiful hills of the Scansano area. It is an incredible Supertuscan, made from a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, vinified separately. The resulting wine then ages in French oak barriques for about 24 months, followed by an additional 6 months in stainless steel tanks. Deep red, elegant, and complex, it has a pleasant aromatic impact of cherry jam and ripe red fruits, with hints of underbrush and vanilla in the background. On the palate, it presents a full-bodied and well-structured profile, characterized by velvety and flavorful tannins. It is to be kept for special occasions, thanks to its longevity of over 40 years.

Jacopo Biondi Santi

Set in the picturesque landscape of the Tuscan Maremma, the winery Jacopo Biondi Santi represents a bridge between history and winemaking innovation. Heir to a legendary winemaking tradition, Jacopo Biondi Santi has managed to imprint his distinctive mark, combining respect for family heritage with a modern and enterprising approach. The winery is located in one of the most fascinating areas of Tuscany, known for its wild beauty and ability to produce wines with a strong personality.
In this sun-kissed land, the Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards find the ideal habitat to express their full potential. The IGT Toscana designation allows for a certain stylistic freedom, which Jacopo Biondi Santi leverages to create wines that tell stories of passion and commitment. The production philosophy here is a wise balance between tradition and innovation, where modern techniques merge with the wisdom of the past to create wines that are authentic works of art.
Among the main labels, the Sassoalloro and Schidione stand out, each with a unique and unmistakable character. The resulting wine ages in French oak barriques for about 24 months, followed by an additional 6 months in stainless steel tanks. THE ESTATE

Jacopo Biondi Santi is the heir and continuator of one of the most illustrious names in Italian wine. He is indeed the son of Franco, the gentleman of Brunello, who made Tenuta il Greppo in Montalcino a significant international reference point. Today, alongside the famous estate in Montalcino, Jacopo also manages the vast estates of the historic Castello di Montepò, south of Grosseto, in the heart of Maremma. This is a subjective and personal challenge that began in 1991, resulting in linear and immediately understandable territorial interpretations, representing an international and modern style. On one hand, Jacopo is aware of being part of one of the most historic families connected to the world of wine in Italy, while on the other, an enterprising personality takes flight, eager to express his future vision beyond a glorious past, showcasing his remarkable entrepreneurial skills.
The winery of Castello di Montepò owned by Jacopo Biondi Santi has a truly remarkable extent, approaching 220 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards stretch across a hilly and sub-hilly area, starting from the north and east towards the Albinia plain and towards the Tyrrhenian coastline. Each parcel has various exposures and altitudes, which can reach up to 500 meters. The microclimate is generally ventilated and dry, with significant temperature variations between day and night, ideal for promoting quality viticulture. The subsoils present a notable mineral richness, characterized by a strong presence of schist. Among the rows, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and of course, Sangiovese, the grape variety that has brought fortune to the family, are cultivated. Every operation among the rows is followed and monitored with great attention by the winery team, just as happens in every phase of winemaking and aging.
The winery Jacopo Biondi Santi is a reality that every year produces several high-level reds, the result of the high winemaking potential of the Maremma territory. Castello di Montepò represents one of the oldest and most important historical testimonies of the area, known even by the novelist Graham Greene, and the produced labels retain this unmistakably Tuscan charm. Among the various bottles, the “Sassoalloro” elegantly interprets Sangiovese, offering a full-bodied and noble sip at the same time.
