The Bertani winery was founded in 1857 by the brothers Giovan Battista and Gaetano Bertani, in  Quinto di Valpantena, north of Verona. Gaetano was an expert in the art of winemaking, having learnt new techniques in France from Professor Guyot, still considered a leading expert in viticulture today. The start of Bertani’s activity coincided with the spirit of innovation that drove them to use  the latest production techniques, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, and applying them to all the estates in Valpantena and Soave, while respecting the territory and the farming traditions in the area.

High level professionalism, quality, business acumen and spirit of innovation were the traits that made the two brothers stand out right from the start in the winemaking sector in Verona. Bertani was one of the first companies in Italy to understand the value of bottled wine; huge investments were made right from the start in the vineyards and in the cellar, to bottle and export Italian quality all over the world with Bertani wines, which crossed the Atlantic and were already popular in many US cities by the end of the nineteenth century.

Bertani was founded at the time of the Italian Unification, with the desire to proudly represent the excellence of a new nation with a thousand-year-old culture. This commitment and the quality of Bertani wines helped it to achieve excellence in 1923: the royal warrant. Although it is an outdated symbol now that Italy is a republic, for us it still represents the achievement of the highest quality.

The constant commitment made in viticulture and winemaking induced the Accademia di Agricoltura, Arti e Commercio di Verona (Academy of Agriculture and Commerce of Verona) to nominate Bertani as a model farm in 1870, thanks to its professionalism, the introduction of monoculture and new training systems to the vineyards that characterised the family’s spirit of enterprise right from the start.
And that wasn’t all: the quality of Bertani wine asserted itself straightaway for its elegance, so much so as that the Soave was on the menu at King George VI’s coronation in England, in 1937.

In the middle of the twentieth century, when they bought the Tenuta Novare, in Valpolicella Classica, Bertani put into effect the half-century long study to produce “the Wine”, made to last forever. This was the start of Amarone, the iconic wine from this area, with the first vintage dating back to 1958.

Recioto della Valpolicella by Bertani is made with the corvina and rondinella grapes from the hills of Valpantena, the same varieties with which Amarone is produced. It comes from the smaller bunches that are better exposed to the sun, then wilted for about 3 months. The typical hints of cherry are enhanced by aging in cherry wood barrels. Wonderful at the end of the meal and meditation.

The Soave DOC 'Vintage' by Bertani is a 'Vintage Edition' 30s packaging but it is an original and modern wine: a slightly more loaded color, a fresh, crisp wine. Fine and elegant with aromatic notes of ripe fruit, peach and pear, with vegetal sensations reminiscent of sage, mint and elder flowers.

The Valpolicella Ripasso DOC by Bertani represents the wine of the Veronese rural tradition and is obtained through an ancient enological practice called "ripasso". This technique involves re-introducing the young Valpolicella onto the skins, still slightly sweet Amarone. Freshness and drinkability, but also the chocolate and sour cherry emotions of the grapes.

Valpolicella Classico 'Le Miniere' by Bertani is the CRU of Novare that can give an extraordinarily pleasant Valpolicella with a nose that is characterized by notes of fresh fruit, cherry, wild berries, wild strawberries complexed by elegant notes of typical white pepper of Corvina. In the mouth the wine is savory, light but with a long persistence and personality. Wine obtained from a careful manual selection of the grapes, from a vineyard intended for the sole production of this wine. Aging for one year.

The Valpolicella Classico by Bertani is made from the most ancient land in Valpolicella. Corvina expresses the warmth, strength and concentration of the fruits of this land: from the Valpolicella Classica the notes of fresh fruit, cherry in particular, from the Valpantena the peppery notes and the silky tannins. A set of sensations of extraordinary elegance and pleasure.

Valpolicella Classico Superiore 'Ognisanti' by Bertani is the CRU of Novare that knows how to give a Valpolicella of superior structure and concentration. Thanks to soils very rich in limestone, a balsamic wine is obtained with rich hints of cherry and morello cherry accompanied by intense notes of white pepper and dried flowers. The careful selection of the grapes and the rested maceration give a Valpolicella of great balance, a vibrant tannic structure and persistent flavor, enriched by a one year refinement in oak barrels and 6 months in the bottle. Extraordinary complexity and fullness, the result of a skilful vinification.

'Catullo' is a Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore, certainly one of the most important wines produced by the Bertani winery. Vinified from Cabernet Sauvignon and Corvina grapes it is characterized by its characteristic and original organoleptic profile at the same time. This red is a full, soft, round and lively wine, with very intense notes of dark fruit, blackberry, black currant and ripe cherry. A slight sapidity with a finish of great persistence.
