Agricultural Rum
Rum Agricole represents one of the most genuine and refined expressions in the world of spirits, a liquid treasure that tells the story and culture of the Caribbean islands, particularly the French Antilles. Unlike traditional rum, Rum Agricole is produced directly from the fermentation and distillation of pure sugarcane juice, also known as "vesou," rather than from molasses, which is a byproduct of sugar processing. This choice gives Rum Agricole a distinctive character, capable of enchanting both newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts.
The history of Rum Agricole dates back to the 17th century, when French colonists brought sugarcane cultivation to their Caribbean colonies. It was here, in these sun-blessed lands, that sugarcane found an ideal habitat, becoming the soul of the renowned rums of Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Marie-Galante. The production of Rum Agricole is deeply rooted in tradition and follows strict guidelines, ensuring a high-quality product with an unmistakable organoleptic profile.
The production process of Rum Agricole begins with the harvest of sugarcane, which generally takes place between February and June. After being cut, the cane is swiftly taken to mills to be pressed and obtain fresh juice, which is then fermented. This brief fermentation, lasting about 24-72 hours, is crucial for developing the complex aromas that will characterize the final distillate. The fermented juice is then distilled, usually in column stills, a method that allows the distinctive flavors of sugarcane to remain intact.
The result is a rum with an extraordinarily rich and complex organoleptic profile. On the nose, Rum Agricole stands out for its fresh and vegetal notes, reminiscent of freshly cut sugarcane, accompanied by fruity and floral hints. On the palate, it offers a dry and lively taste, with a range of nuances spanning from tropical fruit to spices, and even herbal and mineral touches. The structure is generally dry and well-balanced, with a long and persistent finish that leaves a sensation of cleanliness and freshness.
Rum Agricole is available in both white versions, perfect for fresh and aromatic cocktails like the "Ti' Punch," and aged versions, which develop further complexity and depth thanks to time spent in oak barrels. These aged rums are ideal for sipping neat, to fully appreciate their evolution in aromas and flavors.
Whether you are an expert sommelier or an enthusiast seeking new sensory experiences, Rum Agricole represents a fascinating and authentic choice. Explore our selection on Vino45 and let yourself be transported by the magic of the Caribbean, one sip at a time.
