Caccia al Piano

In the lush heart of Tuscany, under the shade of ancient cypress trees that shape the landscape, lies the land of Bolgheri, one of the most charming wine destinations in Italy. It is here that Caccia al Piano was born, a winery that embodies the vibrant soul of this territory, merging tradition and innovation in a perfectly orchestrated embrace. Nestled in a natural setting of rare beauty, Caccia al Piano captures the essence of Bolgheri, renowned for producing wines of extraordinary structure and harmony.
Immersed in a painted landscape, Caccia al Piano passionately dedicates itself to the cultivation of international grape varieties that find their ideal habitat in this corner of Tuscany. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the queen grapes of this winery, creating wines that carry the intensity of the Tuscan sun and the freshness of the sea breeze. The production approach is a blend of tradition and modernity, with a keen eye on quality and sustainability, enhancing the unique character of the cultivated varieties.
Among the labels that tell this story of excellence, the Ruit Hora and Levia Gravia stand out, two wines that represent the very essence of Caccia al Piano. Ruit Hora is a sensory journey through notes of ripe fruit and spices, a wine of great body and depth that invites contemplation. Levia Gravia, on the other hand, presents a rare finesse, a perfect balance between power and elegance, capable of seducing even the most discerning palates.

THE WINE
Ruit Hora by Caccia al Piano has represented for over a decade one of the most brilliant examples of Bolgheri. Harmonious and balanced, this red is capable of playing its cards on particularly elegant and graceful notes. This cuvee of 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Syrah is vinified in steel, then matures in barriques for a period of 18 months followed by a 6-month refinement in bottle. Ideal for accompanying great meat preparations.
Ruit Hora or "the hour that flees" is a tribute to the Odi Barbare by Giosuè Carducci.
THE ESTATE
The Tenuta Caccia al Piano, formerly a hunting estate of the noble Della Gherardesca family, is immersed in the enchanting territory of Bolgheri. Here, the perfect combination of Mediterranean microclimate and clay/calcareous soils gives the ideal terroir for great wines. Along the picturesque Via Bolgherese, which runs between vineyards and olive trees, winemaker Franco Ziliani began a new adventure dedicated to producing wines that leave their mark. A story that began in 2003, filled with passionate commitment that transforms, harvest after harvest, into fragrant, full-bodied, and elegant nectars.
THE VINES
In the land that inspired the poet Giosuè Carducci, care for nature, the wisdom of the gesture, and love for knowledge mark the time and shape the landscape. The Caccia al Piano 1868 vineyards cover 19.5 hectares and are divided into three crus: Caccia al Piano, Le Grottine, and San Biagio. The exposure of the rows and the characteristics of the natural environment allow for the best expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc varieties. The vines are cultivated in a double Guyot system with high density, 9000/10000 plants per hectare, and are managed according to the strict rules of sustainable viticulture. The harvest is exclusively manual. The cultivated area is entirely located in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci and extends over an area of about 30 hectares, of which 19.5 hectares are dedicated to the vineyard. About 3 hectares are allocated to olive trees, which still produce high-quality oil today. The age of the vines varies from 13 to 18 years. The viticulture used aims to maintain an excellent balance, "or almost," of the relationship between the root system, leaf surface, and number of clusters.
THE COMPANY
It was the late nineties when Guido Berlucchi identified, not far from Bolgheri, the ideal place to bring to life great red wines of international caliber. Caccia al Piano was born, an estate of twenty hectares in the heart of the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, one of the most prestigious places in all of Tuscany’s wine region. The ideal climate for grape cultivation: on one side, the continuous sea breezes coming from the Tyrrhenian coast, while on the other, the nearby mountains shield the hills from the colder winds, resulting in relaxed and elegant wines, respectively based on Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
