THE FAMILY
Grapes are not just the foundation of a good wine; they are its essence, its soul, its character. They adapt to the rhythms of nature, conform to the land that welcomes them, and are guided by the hand of the farmer. Cultivating the land is an ancient craft, steeped in traditions and distant times. For seven generations, the family... SperiHas started the activity of winemakers in Valpolicella. Times change, but old values remain, just as the pride of being part of an extraordinary land remains. Valpolicella Classic, combined with the moral duty to tell it through these wines.
Historical family of the Valpolicella, the company Speri is an authoritative and faithful interpreter of the wines of the Valpolicella Classic, having become a point of reference for Italian winemaking due to its continuity and strong connection to the territory.
The history of the company begins in the first half of the 1800s with a few hectares adjacent to the family home. Speri. Over the years, the company has invested in acquiring new properties in the areas with the highest potential. Valpolicella Classical, up to reaching the 60 hectares of today. Times change and sizes grow, but the family management remains, which today proudly reaches the seventh generation.
THE ORGANIC CERTIFICATION
Starting from the belief that the quality of a wine is determined in the vineyard, the family Speri has worked over the years to preserve and promote the fertility of the land, cultivating only native clones and also preserving historic varieties at risk of extinction, in respect of the biodiversity of the territory. The long experience of winemakers and the continuous pursuit of quality have led us to a viticulture that is particularly attentive to tradition and the environment.
The "open inclined pergola" cultivation system best expresses the native varieties and promotes optimal sun exposure, especially in hilly areas.
To reduce yields in the vineyard, we practice cover cropping and do not use fertilization. Additionally, we regularly carry out uprooting, pruning, and thinning operations.
The grapes are hand-picked and carefully selected by experienced hands. In the hillside vineyards, the company has chosen to preserve the historic dry-stone walls, known as "marogne," instead of resorting to land clearing. For years, the company has also been applying the principles of sustainable agriculture and, starting from... from the 2015 harvest, after the conversion phase, it obtains the organic certification.
The aim is to maximize the natural balance of the agro-ecosystem by implementing practices that combine knowledge of ecology, plant physiology, biochemistry, and insect behavior.
Examples include the permanent grassing of the entire surface that ensures the presence of organic matter, the composting of pruning and winemaking residues that returns part of its products to the environment, or the control of the main vine pest, the grapevine moth, through the modern technique of sexual confusion.
THE VINEYARDS
The company's properties are all located in Valpolicella Classical (historic area) in the most suitable areas, at an altitude ranging from 150 to 350 meters with a remarkable variety of soils and microclimates.
In order to better express these micro-zones, we vinify separately the grapes coming from the most important vineyards, creating prestigious wines. Cru that take their name from their vineyard of origin.
The hillside vineyards are cultivated on terraces made of dry stone walls, also known as "marogne": they not only serve as a valuable tool to improve cultivation on the hills, but they also have a high historical value. For this reason, by safeguarding them, we can say that we have made our small contribution to the enhancement of the territory.
