THE FARM

Wine Art and Poetry on Etna

“A good wine is poetry and it is an art to produce it”: it is around this insight that the winery Al-Cantàra was created. Albeit young, the winery is establishing a reputation for itself nationally and internationally thanks to the high quality of its wines, which have been awarded important prizes such as the Vinitaly’s Diploma di Gran Menzione, and also thanks to the sophisticated and modern packaging which seeks to evoke the terroir, the traditions and the culture of Sicily.

The winery takes its name from the river which, on the slopes of Mount Etna, flows below the estate Feudo S. Anastasia (Randazzo), where the vineyards are located. The choice of the name “Al- Cantàra”, which in Arabic means “bridge”, aims not only to emphasize the link with the Sicilian terroir, but to be the symbol of the union between wine, art and poetry. For this reason all the names of the wines are inspired by the poems by Sicilian authors such as Nino Martoglio, Micio Tempio, Giovanni Meli, Salvatore Di Pietro and Alfio Antico.

In its 20 hectares of land, the winery produces ETNA DOC and Sicilia IGT wines made only with grapes harvested from its land, favouring native grape varieties (Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante), but without neglecting experimenting with other varieties (Pinot Noir and Gewürtz Traminer). The volcanic soil of the Etna, rich in minerals, gives unique flavour and aromas to these wines.

The Territory: Randazzo

The winery is located on the north-west slope of the Mount Etna, the Vulcano also named “Mongibello” by Dante and in a location steeped in classical mythology (Acis and Galatea, Vulcan and the Cyclops, Ulysses and Polyphemus, Scylla and Charybdis). The closest town, Randazzo, lapped by the river Alcantara, is the nearest town to the central crater of Etna. The name “Randazzo” it is thought to be derived from “Randacium” following various modifications of the name “Trinacium” which was the name of the oldest city that was built on this site.

Others think that the name in fact comes from some unidentified relative of the governor of Taormina, “Randas” who occupied the lands of the district of Randazzo during the Byzantine era. The origins of Randazzo, despite numerous studies, are still shrouded in mystery. According to mythology it was the giant Piracmone who founded the city, the same giant who is allegedly represented in a statue located in the square S. Nicola of Randazzo.

From a strictly historical point of view, in the past it was believed that the city had been created from the merge of five cities in the area where today Randazzo is located. Today, this hypothesis has been abandoned, but it is still uncertain how and when the city, often identified with Tissa, was found. In any case, the first real nucleus of inhabitants of Randazzo (“randazzesi”) was formed around 403 BC when the citizens of Naxos (near Taormina), fleeing the destruction of their city by the Greek colonizers, followed upstream the river Alcantara and settled in the place where now stands Randazzo, probably merging with the small indigenous peasant populations.
