THE WINE

Vanotu is the diminutive in Piedmontese dialect of Giovanni, Giorgio's grandfather and previous owner of this vineyard. Therefore it is a part of our winery to which we are very fond of. Thanks to the particular climate and exposure of this vineyard we can obtain even in poor vintages great character and personality wines.

Technical notes: produced through modern and innovative methods (controlled temperatures, mechanical automatic timed and planned punching) trying to lead into the bottle the maximum exaltation of the varietal characteristics of Nebbiolo grapes. Aged for 20/22 months in barriques (80% of them are new) then 9 months in bottles we aim at creating concentration, fruit, soft tannic complexity. Our will is to make an innovative wine trying to maintain and exalt the great qualities of Nebbiolo. The first bottled vintage was in 1960.

VANOTU FARM

Vanotu is the most prestigious among our vineyards, the one that gifted us with the first bottles in 1960. It is a tract of land located at between 300 and 350 meters in elevation, completely exposed to the south and located in the natural end of one of the most beautiful hills in the Barbaresco zone. Geographically it is located on the border of the three towns of the Barbaresco production zone.

The highest portion is in the township of Barbaresco, in the sub-zone called Tre Stelle and it was the first to be replanted by Luigi Pelissero in 1964. It included an old farm house currently being restructured to create a small accommodation facility. Below this portion, downhill from the provincial road, there is the portion of the vineyard belonging to the township of Treiso, in the sub-zone denominated Marcarini. Following the vineyard towards the east, one enters at its end the portion of the township of Neive, the smallest of the three, in the sub-zone denominated Basarin. It is the natural intersection of three towns, three throbbing hearts for the entire economy of this splendid area.

The microclimate is windy with few problems of mildew thanks in higher location on the hill, as this guarantees a normal seasonal development even during not very favorable years. The soil, particularly rich limestone, produces wines that are soft, elegant, and persuasive and loaded with character, always very expressive each year through the notes of sage, mint, rose, camomille, thyme and a multitude of aromatic herbs which only a few areas of Langa are able to express.

THE COMPANY

Our family has always been dedicated to agriculture with a Langa and peasant DNA. We are in Treiso, a township that became independent from Barbaresco in 1957, and which is in the heart of the production zone of one of the top three Italian DOCG, King Nebbiolo. It is the grape varietal that more than any other has defined and will continue to define the history of our hills and of the national and international wine making. We are the heirs of this land and of this vine.

The spirit of continuous research in the vineyard, and afterwards in the cellar, plus passion, commitment and innovative dynamism are the firm bases that we combine with the pride of having reached the third generation of viticulturists. Our philosophy has not changed, however: we focus only on original varietals that are typical of our land, particularly Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto, which make up about 85% of our production. All the grapes that we use come from the 38 hectares that we own. We are able, with the help of knowledgeable colleagues, to directly supervise the entire production cycle, from pruning to marketing of 250,000 bottles every year.
