THE DISTILLERY
The town of Elgin, in the northeast of Scotland, is considered “the whisky capital of the world.” It is here that in 1895 Gordon & Macphail was founded by James Gordon and John Alexander McPhail. Their insight was to combine the typical “drugstore” with a wine and spirits shop, merging two distinct business activities and effectively becoming pioneers of the single malt market outside the Highlands. Their choices quickly proved more than successful: by selecting and purchasing the best new whiskies directly from the producer, then aging them in the finest casks, and finally bottling them at the most opportune moment, Gordon & Macphail dominated the single malt market during the thirty-year period from 1955 to 1985, becoming known for its complex and elegant style. Today, the company, leveraging the excellent relationships it has established with all Scottish distilleries, possesses an immense and diversified stock of whisky in its warehouses and continues to be present in the market with prestige and authority.
