'Joseph' by Hofstätter is a very typical Gewürztraminer: deep and bright straw colour, it has a good concentration and a pronounced aromatic vein, with spicy-smoky notes of dried flowers and roses which tend to expand and thicken in the glass . The taste is dense and rich, with a firm body, notable freshness and liveliness. It is advisable to let this wine age further in the bottle for at least 1 year, so that it can refine its bouquet to the maximum.

10 Facts about the Hofstätter estate

1. Tradition - Josef Hofstätter founded the winery in the year 1907. The historic family winery is now operated in the fourth generation by his descended nephew Martin Foradori Hofstätter.

2. Vineyards - With around 50 hectares of estate property vineyards, the Josef Hofstätter winery is among the largest wineries in Alto Adige.

3. Altitude - The vineyards are situated at altitudes between 250 and 800 metres above sea level (800 and 2.600 foot), which makes the cultivation of diverse grape varieties possible.

4. Cardinal Points - The Hofstätter estate is the only family-operated winery in South Tyrol that owns vineyards on both the west and east sides of the Adige River. With this, they possess a large diversity of microclimatic zones.

5. Grape Varieties – white and black - Both white and black grapes find ideal growing conditions in the estate’s vineyards thanks to the diversity of the various sites. Attention is focussed on the traditional regional grape varieties: Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Lagrein, and Schiava.

6. Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir - With the vineyards at Kolbenhof including the Rechenthaler Schlossleiten Vineyard in Söll near Tramin and the vineyards at Barthenau in Mazon, Hofstätter possesses the largest area in Alto Adige planted with Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir.

7. Single-Vineyard Wines - The Hofstätter wines express a sense of place. They taste of the vineyards in which the grapes were grown and reflect their soils and climatic conditions. The Gewürztraminer from Kolbenhof and the Pinot Noir Vigna S. Urbano from Barthenau are among the first single vineyard wines to be produced in Alto Adige.

8. „Vigna“ - The wines from the single-vineyards always carry the Italian word “Vigna” in their name. This signifies and highlights the elevated quality category of the single vineyards wines and is the equivalent of the French word “Cru”.

9. Viticulture - The ever gentle and sustainable methods of cultivation at Hofstätter allow healthy, vital vines to thrive. The vines live long and reward the vintner with superb fruit for superb wines.

10. Riesling - Martin Foradori Hofstätter can now follow his passion for Riesling on the Saar River in Germany. He is the first Italian vintner to own sites here, a place that is predestined for Riesling. The vines have been cultivated by the VDP winery Weingut Fischer - Bocksteinhof, which is now operated by Martin Foradori Hofstätter, Johannes Fischer, and Nik Weis from St. Urbans-Hof.

Winery

Visitors to the headquarters and winery of the Josef Hofstätter estate find themselves in the main square of a bustling large village with the municipal hall, bars and the village church.

The winery and offices are accommodated in a grand 16th century edifice, originally built for the Austrian Imperial post coaches and it also housed the ‘Schwarzer Adler’ inn belonging to Martin Foradori’s great aunt. Josef Hofstätter made his first wines in the inn’s cellars. His nephew Konrad Oberhofer and wife Luise took over the estate in 1942 and it was he who recognised the potential inherent in vineyards.

He was the very first in South Tyrol to keep separate the grapes harvested in individual sites and name the resulting wines after the respective vineyards. Konrad Oberhofer’s daughter Sieglinde married Paolo Foradori in 1959. Paolo comes from an old-established family of winegrowers in the Adige Valley and owned vineyards in superb locations on the eastern side of the valley opposite Tramin.

Since then these vineyards have been administered together with those on the Tramin side of the valley in the family company’s headquarters which still bears the name of the estate’s founder, Josef Hofstätter.
