"Le Chiuse" winery can boast one of the most fascinating stories in all of Montalcino, which dates back to 1700 and is closely linked to the history of the Il Greppo di Biondi Santi estate. Le Chiuse, in fact, was once part of the possessions of the Biondi Santi family, and was brought as a dowry by Maria Tamanti when she married Clemente Santi.
"Le Chiuse", so called because the vineyard was closed and surrounded within the estate. The first Brunello Riserva Biondi Santi was born there. Tancredi Biondi Santi then bequeathed the vineyard to his daughter Fiorella - the very vineyard where Brunello Riserva was born - with the recommendation never to sell it. Fiorella did not sell it, but leased it to her brother Franco, owner of Tenuta Il Greppo. With Fiorella's death, in the early 90s, her daughter Simonetta Valiani began producing the Brunello of this vineyard on her own, building an underground cellar and planting new vineyards through mass selections, to maintain the genetic heritage of the old vines.
The estate can currently count on an area that reaches 18 hectares in total, divided between woods, vineyards and olive groves, on the north, north / east and south / east sides of Montalcino. The vineyards, all added together, come to cover about eight hectares, all cultivated with the Sangiovese grosso variety, and since 2001 conducted strictly according to the criteria of organic farming.
Le Chiuse bottles two Brunellos, a base and a Riserva, and a Rosso di Montalcino, as well as a classic method sparkling wine, the "Stellare". Labels, those that come out of what was once the Biondi Santi estate, which as if by magic always maintain the highest quality standards unchanged, season after season, in a sort of extraordinary historical continuity that seems to be impossible to interrupt.
