The very name, evocative and suggestive, calls to mind stories of fleeing queens and enchanting landscapes, and the winery does not disappoint those seeking authenticity and passion. Located in a rich and diverse territory, Donnafugata is dedicated to producing wines under the prestigious DOC Sicilia and DOC Etna denominations, enhancing the variety and richness of the island's terroir.
The production philosophy of Donnafugata is intrinsically linked to sustainability and innovation, an approach that is reflected not only in the cultivation of their vines but also in the artistic care of the labels, which are true visual masterpieces that tell the stories captured in each bottle. The cultivated grapes, such as Nero d'Avola, Zibibbo, and Grillo, represent the soul of Sicily, each with a unique character expressed in wines of great personality and depth.

THE WINE
'Sur Sur'"of"DonnafugataIt is a pure Grillo, capable of encompassing all those typical characteristics of this extraordinary grape variety. On the nose, it is fruity, floral, and with notes of freshly cut grass, soft and fresh on the palate. A pleasant wine for more informal moments. It pairs well with gourmet sandwiches, vegetarian dishes, and seafood pasta.
Curiosity
The name sur sur, which means cricket, comes from classical Arabic, once spoken in Sicily as well. The label has the voice of spring, with its scents and colors. It tells the stories of Gabriella's escapes, a little girl (founder of... Donnafugata together with her husband Giacomo) who runs barefoot among the flowers and the fresh grass, following the song of the crickets that sounds sweet to her ears like a thousand "SurSur...".
THE COMPANY
The nameDonnafugata, "woman on the run," refers to the story of Queen Maria Carolina, wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who in the early 1800s - fled from Naples due to the arrival of Napoleon's troops - took refuge in that part of Sicily where the company’s vineyards are located today. This event inspired the company logo, which features the image of a woman's head with wind-blown hair that appears on every bottle. It was the writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, in the novel The Leopard, who referred to her by the name of Donnafugata those rural estates of the Prince of Salina that welcomed the fleeing queen and that today host the company vineyards.
THE CELLARS
The wines of DonnafugataThey interpret Sicily and passionately narrate its sensory universe. Soil type, exposure, altitude, climate trends, and grape variety are the main variables at play to achieve wines that authentically express their belonging to unique terroirs. After choosing the grape-territory pairing, targeted viticulture "reads" the vineyard with care and sensitivity in its interaction with the environment to bring the grapes to their peak quality. Frequent tastings of the grapes in the field allow for identifying the ideal moment for harvesting each individual vineyard. The winemaking processes involve the use of simple technologies that respect the integrity of the grapes, musts, and wines. The technical staff, through continuous tastings, verifies the sensory objectives and the alignment with the fruit and the territory. By intervening in the ongoing processes, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, precision winemaking redefines the boundaries of quality year after year. The team is made up of skilled and cohesive technicians (agronomist oenologist, quality control manager, cellar workers, and vineyard managers) who accompany the stages of the production process so that nature can take its course in the best possible way.
Contessa Entellina
The winery is located in the heart of Western Sicily where the vineyards are an integral part of the landscape. Donnafugata It cultivates a variety of grape varieties, both native and international, in 10 different districts. This agronomic choice aims to enhance the characteristics of the different terroirs (soil, altitude, exposure) and the various varieties to produce complex wines rich in personality.
The vineyards of Pantelleria
The vineyards and the winery of Donnafugata in Pantelleria harmoniously blend into the landscape and the specific agricultural context of the island of wind. Pantelleria is a volcanic island between Sicily and Africa, and it is a rare example of heroic viticulture. The landscape exudes the farmer's toil in building terraces and dry stone walls and in cultivating the vineyard shaped by the wind. The vineyards, where... Donnafugata It cultivates Zibibbo, which is located in 12 different districts characterized by soil, altitude, exposure, and the age of the plants (some over 100 years old). In the Khamma winery, an example of sustainable architecture, the individual batches of Zibibbo are processed separately, enhancing the diversity of the viticultural contexts.
The wineries of Marsala
The ancient family cellars are the beating heart and the strategic center of the business where the aging and bottling of wines take place. Donnafugata. The Marsala cellars, built in 1851, are a living example of industrial archaeology. They preserve the typical layout of the Mediterranean "baglio" with a large internal courtyard dotted with citrus trees and olive trees, and wooden trusses crafted by ancient master carpenters. Today, they host a dynamic production reality aimed at excellence. Here, products from Contessa Entellina and Pantelleria come together for aging processes (in steel, cement, wood) and bottling. The cellar processes involve the use of simple technologies that are increasingly respectful of the intrinsic qualities of musts and wines. Considering the importance of temperature control at every stage of the production process, the environments are air-conditioned and insulated to achieve maximum energy savings; even the tuff material of the construction and the high ceilings (7 meters) supported by wooden trusses naturally isolate the environments from the high temperatures typically found in Sicily. In line with the company's environmental policies, there is also the underground barrel cellar carved into the tuff rock.
