THE WINE
The Brunello di Montalcino 'Poggio al Granchio' by Val di Suga originates in a magical place: a narrow valley on the southeast ridge of Montalcino. A historic cru for Brunello di Montalcino. Pure Sangiovese grapes, aged first in barrels and then in French oak casks for a total period of 30 months. An elegant but assertive Brunello, with great aging potential.
THE VINEYARD
Poggio al Granchio is a magical place for its environmental and landscape value; it is a narrow valley on the southeast ridge of Montalcino descending towards Sant’Antimo.
It is the area that reaches the highest altitudes for the vineyards of the Ilcinese hill. It is a vineyard kissed by the morning sun and climatically influenced by the strong influence of Monte Amiata (an ex-volcano and sacred mountain for the Etruscans) which stands right in front of it.
This area of Montalcino is characterized by soils rich in galestro, particularly valuable for Brunello. On galestro, Sangiovese becomes mineral, savory, with silky tannins; on the nose, it expresses notes of ripe forest fruit, combined with that unmistakable scent of flint that can also be detected by smelling these schists. The wines have a subtle, elegant but assertive entry, resulting in savory and mineral characteristics. Here, Brunello is dark in color and has great aging potential.
Its name “Poggio al Granchio” comes from a tiny pond in the center of the property, under an imposing holm oak, where some friendly and lively freshwater crabs can be found.
THE COMPANY
A company with a unique characteristic within the terroir of Montalcino, Val di Suga distinguishes itself from other companies in the area for its famous three vineyards located in the three exposures of Montalcino. Three vineyards essentially, marked by deeply different characteristics: Vigna del Lago is exposed to the north, Vigna Spuntali is located to the southwest, and Poggio al Granchio is located to the southeast. This unique difference of the company, which is part of the Bertani Domains group, compared to others operating in Montalcino, is the ability to count on entirely different vineyards and thus produce three types of Brunello that are equally different.
The winery, located northeast of the municipality of Montalcino, is part of the original complex now renovated and reorganized with a new underground barrel room and encompasses a total area of 120 hectares, of which 55 are planted and cultivated with Sangiovese. The added value of Val di Suga lies precisely in the diversification of being able to offer three variants of Brunello that are the perfect representation of three great crus, where the evolutions of Sangiovese express themselves in a totality of wines that are true cults of Montalcino winemaking.
