It is produced from old vines over 20 years old in the Furggl area near Ora, where the grapes accumulate structure and vigor. One-third is vinified in large wooden barrels and two-thirds in barriques for 12 months. A particularity: 10% of the grapes is left to ferment with its own stems to acquire vigor and tannins. The single-varietal presents itself in the glass with a purplish-red hue and a black heart, unfolding an inviting aromatic play of chocolate, plum, and licorice. The story of Waldgries, represented by the figure of Christian Plattner, begins back in 1930 when Christian's grandfather bought the estate and started exporting the wines he produced to Switzerland. Then came the management of the winery by his father, who engaged in a pioneering bottling activity, a practice still not widespread in the Santa Maddalena area. From these solid family foundations, it is now Christian who carries on the name and reputation of the winery, with foresight and winemaking talent while always looking back at the roots that have shaped him. Waldgries vinifies expressions of Lagrein and Schiava with rich structure and body due, in addition to impeccable work in the cellar, to the nature of its soils, which are of glacial origin and rich in porphyry.
