Basilisco
In the heart of Vulture, the winery Basilisco stands out as a beacon of oenological excellence, intertwining the millennia-old history of this volcanic land with a modern and environmentally respectful approach. Here, in the deep south of Basilicata, Aglianico vines find their ideal habitat, nourished by the minerals that the volcanic soil generously provides. Basilisco embodies the spirit of this rugged and fascinating territory, where nature and viticulture merge in a continuous and harmonious dialogue.
The production philosophy of Basilisco is deeply rooted in tradition but always with an eye towards innovation and sustainability. Each bunch is cultivated following the principles of organic farming, ensuring that the quality of the wines is the result of a natural process that respects the ecosystem. This dedication to the land and the purity of the grapes is reflected in the extraordinary elegance of the wines produced, where the power of the Aglianico grape expresses itself with finesse and structure.
Among the standout labels, the Aglianico del Vulture from Basilisco is a wine that transports those who taste it on a sensory journey through its aromatic complexity and depth of flavor. The well-defined tannins and long persistence on the palate make it an ideal companion for rich and flavorful dishes, enhancing the unique characteristics of the Lucanian terroir. This wine is not just a product, but an experience that tells stories of passion, terroir, and innovation.

THE COMPANY
Basilisco was founded in the early 1990s, immediately aiming for the highest quality, both in the vineyard and in the winery, and within a few years it became a gem of the winemaking scene in the south. At the beginning of 2011, the company Feudi di San Gregorio, which has been present in Vulture for over ten years, decided to start a project to recover the ancient lava caves in the “Shesh,” the historic Park of the Cantine of Barile, confidently relaunching the bet made on this area of exceptional viticultural value, culminating in the acquisition of the nearby Basilisco. With its splendid cellars in tuff and its vineyards in the most vocated areas of the region, Basilisco completes this project.Nasce thus a space of enchanting beauty in the historic heart of Aglianico del Vulture. The face and soul of Basilisco is Viviana Malafarina, who manages the company and personally and passionately oversees the winery operations, under the expert guidance of Pierpaolo Sirch, who is also responsible for vineyard management.
THE HISTORY OF THE CELLARS
Basilisco is located on Via delle Cantine, in a stately 16th-century building. Its wine-making and wine storage spaces are found in the fascinating Shesh caves chosen by Pierpaolo Pasolini as the setting for “The Gospel According to Matthew.” In the 15th century, some groups of Albanian refugees, fleeing Turkish pressure, settled in various areas of southern Italy, creating true enclaves still existing today. Barile is an arbereshe settlement (Italian-Albanian ethnicity), and the dozens of caves carved into the tuff that characterize the landscape were excavated by the colonists for residential purposes. Many tunnels run under the town, crossing the lava flow from north to south. The caves facing the northern side have a constant temperature of about 16-18 degrees, making them ideal for storage and have always been used for the processing of wine and oil. Just as it has been done since ancient times, even today in the 8 caves of Basilisco, Aglianico del Vulture is vinified and then allowed to rest in the silent meanders of the volcano.
VULTURE, VINEYARDS AND TERRITORY
Since the last eruption, 130,000 years ago, nature has regained its balance, giving rise to a terroir with exceptional characteristics. Since then, the majestic Vulture volcano watches over the territory, nurturing a simple, spontaneous viticulture, dotted with small bush-trained vines. Our 25 hectares of vineyard are entirely organic. Pierpaolo Sirch, an expert in viticulture and our manager, runs the property believing that by allowing the plants and the soil to reach their right balance, the best possible fruit can be obtained with the least possible intervention. All the vineyards are in the most vocated Contrade of Barile and are located between 450 and 600 m in altitude with a southeast exposure. Among these is “Lo Storico,” a beautiful old vineyard with traditional bush training, where the vines grow among olive trees and fruit trees, making the work anything but simple, but giving us great emotions in the vineyard and in the glass. The harvest, exclusively manual, allows us to collect the grapes respecting the ripening times of the microzones that, despite their proximity, are different from each other in terms of pedoclimatic characteristics. The volcanic, tuffaceous soils with layers of flysch and the significant temperature variations give our wines, rich in fruit, also unmistakable freshness and minerality.
