THE WINE
The Brunello di Montalcino 'Vigna del Lago' by Val di Suga is born in the coldest area of Brunello, the last to be harvested. A historic Cru for Brunello di Montalcino. Pure Sangiovese grapes, aged for 30 months in French oak barrels, followed by a further aging in bottle of at least 18 months. Brunello of great softness, roundness, and lightness.
THE VINEYARD
The northern slope of Montalcino was once not so vineyard-focused, but dedicated to the cultivation of cereals, olives, and cherries. In this area, influenced by the Apennines, the seasons are more distinct, of a continental type, and the north wind lowers the temperature significantly during winter. Therefore, it is the coldest area of Brunello in this season, but also the rainiest. This northern slope is characterized by the gentle orography of the hills: a feature that more resembles the Senese clay hills that follow, rather than the two harsher, steeper, and warmer southern sides of Montalcino. The climate and soil origin ensure that this area of Montalcino is the last to be harvested.
Vigna del Lago is the vineyard that welcomes all visitors coming from the north to Montalcino. It takes its name from the lake that surrounds it and plays a decisive role in the micro-climate of this area; the soil is a continuous alternation of clay and very fine schist strips.
THE COMPANY
A company with a unique characteristic within the Montalcino terroir, Val di Suga stands out from other companies in the area for its three famous vineyards located in the three different exposures of Montalcino. Three vineyards, essentially, marked by deeply different characteristics: Vigna del Lago is exposed to the north, Vigna Spuntali is located to the southwest, and Poggio al Granchio is located to the southeast. Thus, the unique difference of the company, part of the Bertani Domains group, compared to others operating in Montalcino, is the ability to rely on vineyards that are completely different from each other and therefore produce three types of Brunello that are equally distinct.
The winery, located northeast of the municipality of Montalcino, is part of the original complex now renovated and reorganized with a new underground barrel cellar and covers a total area of 120 hectares, of which 55 are planted and cultivated with Sangiovese. The added value of Val di Suga lies precisely in the diversification of being able to offer three variants of Brunello that are the perfect representation of three great cru, where the evolutions of Sangiovese are expressed in the entirety of wines that are true cults of Montalcino oenology.
