THE WINE

THE VINEYARD
The northern slope of Montalcino was once not so vine-planted, but dedicated to the cultivation of cereals, olives, and cherries. In this area, which is influenced by the Apennines, the seasons are more distinct, of a continental type, and the tramontana lowers the temperature by many degrees in the winter period. It is therefore the coldest area of Brunello in this season, but also the rainiest. This northern slope is characterized by a gentle topography of the hills: a feature that resembles more the senesi clays, immediately following, than the two steeper, hotter southern slopes of Montalcino. The climate and the origin of the soils mean that this area of Montalcino is the last to be harvested.
Vigna del Lago is the vineyard that welcomes all visitors arriving from the north to Montalcino. It takes its name from the lake that surrounds it and plays a crucial role in the microclimate of this area; the soil is a continuous alternation of clay and fine galestro stripes.
THE COMPANY
A company with a unique characteristic within the Montalcino terroir, Val di Suga stands out from other companies in the area for its famous three vineyards located in the three exposures of Montalcino. Three vineyards, essentially, marked by characteristics that are profoundly different from each other: Vigna del Lago is facing north, Vigna Spuntali is located to the southwest, and Poggio al Granchio is located to the southeast. A unique difference for the company that is part of the Bertani Domains group compared to others operating in Montalcino, being able to count on vineyards that are entirely different from each other and therefore produce three types of Brunello that are equally different.
The winery, located northeast of the municipality of Montalcino, is part of the original complex now renovated and reorganized with a new underground barrel room and covers a total area of 120 hectares, of which 55 are planted and cultivated with Sangiovese. The added value of Val di Suga lies in the diversification of offering three variants of Brunello that are the perfect representation of three great crus, where the evolutions of Sangiovese are expressed in a totality of wines that are true cults of Montalcino oenology.
