In the enchanted land of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where the vineyards intertwine with the clear sky and the crisp air of the Isonzo, stands the winery Lis Neris. Here, among landscapes that seem painted in watercolor, wine is not just a tradition, but a true form of art, and Lis Neris is its master craftsman. This winery has become a beacon for lovers of Friulian whites, thanks to its dedication to structure and precision.
In the vineyards of Lis Neris, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon find their ideal habitat, cradled by a climate that enhances their most subtle and complex characteristics. The production philosophy focuses on the expressive purity of the grape variety, an approach that allows each grape to tell its own story, without interference, with a clear and authentic voice.
Among the gems produced by Lis Neris, the wines Gris and Lis stand out. The Gris enchants with its elegance and depth, offering the palate a silky harmonious experience, while the Lis is distinguished by its complexity and strong character, capable of surprising and captivating with every sip. THE COMPANY
When the Isonzo River abandons the narrow channels that constrain it during its journey through Slovenia, here comes Gorizia, one of the most contested border cities in Europe. An enchanting landscape appears, dotted with small towns that have grown around a bell tower. The vineyards characterize the landscape and mark the rhythm of the days with their phases.
In this context, since 1879, four generations of my family have contributed with work and passion to the construction and growth of one of the most representative production realities of Eastern Friuli.
THE TERRITORY AND THE VINEYARDS
In the beginning, there was the sea which, during the Tertiary period, covered a large part of the region and which, as it receded, brought to light the sedimentary rocks. Thus, the rocky substrate was formed.
The Isonzo valley was carved by the Quaternary glaciations, and the melting waters of the glaciers have shaped its current profile. In the subsequent periods, thanks to the disintegrating action of atmospheric agents, a reddish clayey surface layer rich in iron oxides and other minerals originated. The underlying gravel mass favors the distribution of water and oxygen, making the subsoil very hospitable for the development and activity of roots.
Thus, the soils of the Isonzo valley were formed.
Here grow the vineyards of Lis Neris: over 70 hectares of vines are planted between the Slovenian border to the north and the right bank of the Isonzo to the south. The surface pebbles, locally called claps, absorb heat during the day and release it at night, which encourages the ripening of the grapes.
Thus, powerful wines are born.
Finally, there is the Bora, dominant winds coming from the northeast capable of creating thermal excursions that slow down ripening, favoring the aromatic concentration of the grapes and the balance of acids.
Thus, elegant wines are born.
SUSTAINABILITY
The relationship between man and the land, developed over time, has led to the definition of terroir. A term that identifies the vineyard site with its own morphological, climatic, social, cultural, and human identities. The knowledge and respect for the environment allow us to infuse into our wines, more and more, the character of the terroir.
A modern company cannot do without technology, but in our vineyards, many operations are performed in full respect of tradition and are foreign to any commercial logic. For the sake of quality, operations such as pruning, shoot selection, leaf removal, thinning of clusters, and harvesting are performed manually. We have also chosen to abandon chemical herbicides, reduce phytosanitary treatments, and maintain cover crops in the fields. Experience has taught us that the biological health of the soil allows the vines to autonomously develop defenses against pathogens, reacting spontaneously to adversities. In doing so, the plants are strong enough to ripen the fruits but not to produce a large leaf mass. Lis Neris has always maintained a close relationship with the vineyard and the surrounding territory. Living in a natural environment is a condition we do not want to give up.
