THE WINE
The 'Insoglio del Cinghiale Campo di Sasso' by Tenuta di Biserno, a reality founded in 2001 by Marquis Lodovico Antinori, eager to invest in the terroir of Alta Maremma, is the cornerstone of the winery. THE ESTATE
Lodovico Antinori, the genius behind Ornellaia and Masseto, after having brought his wines to the highest peak possible, has taken on the challenge again, aiming perhaps even higher this time. In 1995, in fact, Lodovico Antinori discovered the lands of Tenuta di Biserno, initially thinking of merging the plots with those of Tenuta Ornellaia, only to change his mind after realizing that the nature and size of the land required a separate winemaking project.
We are just a step away from Bolgheri, in Alta Maremma, and Lodovico immediately understands the high potential of this territory for Bordeaux blends. For the Marquis, “the vineyards of Bibbona and Bolgheri meet, reminiscent of those of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol.” The Tenuta consists of a single large vineyard, called Bellaria, which in the southern area belongs to the territory of Bolgheri, while in the northern zone it falls within the area of Biserno. It is here that the Lodovico vineyard stretches: six hectares of land now considered by all to be the most suitable in the area.
Among the rows, primarily Cabernet Franc plants are found, complemented by small percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot, completing the vine composition. On alluvial soils rich in limestone, calcium carbonate, and pebbles, and enjoying a microclimate refreshed by constant breezes, high-quality and sincere grapes are cultivated and harvested, concentrated in every smallest organoleptic nuance. Part of Biserno is also a second estate, Campo di Sasso, adjacent to the first and consisting of three vineyards, where Syrah finds ideal growing conditions. In the cellar, the winemaking consultancy is entrusted to Michel Rolland, the oenologist to whom many wineries worldwide owe their fame, including many of the greatest Châteaux of Bordeaux.
All of this translates into four names: “Biserno”, “Lodovico”, “Insoglio del Cinghiale”, and “Il Pino di Biserno”: four wines that speak of the highest winemaking excellence, expressed by one of the most historic families in the international wine scene.
