VIGNA SAN FRANCESCO -San Francesco is the vineyard that represents the emblem of Tasca d'Almerita At Regaleali, there is continuous research and innovation to improve the quality of wines. Founded in 1985 by Lucio Tasca, It has been divided into two different portions based on the nature of the land. The higher part, on the South-East slope of the Canalotto valley, at an altitude between 532 and 585 meters, has been reserved for Cabernet Sauvignon. The soil is made up of sands and sandstones of varying grain size, with a texture that is partly clayey and calcareous, and has a slightly alkaline pH (8.3). It is moderately deep soil, where the development of the vine's root system is abundant in the first 60 centimeters and more moderate up to one meter deep. It has a normal content of organic matter and is rich in mineral salts such as magnesium and potassium, while being poor in phosphorus. The vines were planted at a spacing of 2.60 by 1.1 meters (3,490 plants per hectare). The training system is trellis, with short pruning to a spurred cordon. Cabernet Sauvignon is a late variety, with a very long growing season. The grape harvest, carried out by hand by skilled winemakers who can select the bunches already in the vineyard, typically takes place between mid-September and the first ten days of October.
ROSSO DEL CONTE -San Lucio is the first large vineyard identified in the... Tenuta Regaleali, from which the first and subsequent editions of Rosso del Conte were born, extends over approximately 7 hectares, of which 5.5 were planted in 1959 with mixed Perricone and Nero d’Avola vines, while a portion of about 1.5 hectares was planted in 1965 with only Nero d’Avola. The altitude is 480 meters above sea level, with a South – South/East exposure. The soil is brownish-yellow, sandy-loam, partly calcareous, with a slight presence of gravel; the pH is slightly alkaline (8.5). The oldest vineyard in Regaleali usually gives medium vigor to the vines, which is a prerequisite for balanced ripening of red and medium-late grapes. It is capable of withstanding the influence of extreme climates, whether hot or cold, and produces a few grams of grapes per plant, with incredible qualitative consistency. It is cultivated in the bush training system, the oldest and most widespread training method in the semi-arid regions of the Mediterranean. The planting density remains classic, at 4,400 plants per hectare, achieved by spacing the vines 1.5 meters apart. In Regaleali, for red varieties, a short pruning system is adopted, with three to four spurs of two buds each. Short pruning is often associated with the presence of a support for tying the shoots that develop from the spurs. The two varieties, Perricone and Nero d’Avola, have a similar growing cycle: they are quite late-ripening grapes, maturing on average between the end of September and the beginning of October. A faithful expression of the territory from which it comes, the high hills in the center of Sicily, the Rosso del Conte never exceeds in overripe notes on the aromatic level, while ensuring full phenolic ripeness. Exuberant, vibrant, and energetic in its youth, with aging it develops a velvety tactile sensation, without losing tone and flavor progression. In its long history, it has experienced various stylistic variations, particularly in aging techniques: chestnut barrels, Slavonian oak, and small French oak barrels, while still maintaining its unique identity.
THE COMPANY
Our story is written in the land to which, for eight generations, we have dedicated the attention and love that is given to a family member. Our grandparents taught us to respect it with our gaze always turned towards the future, and this vision still allows us to have lush vineyards and cultivate rich and fertile soils. Over the years, at the historic estate of Regaleali, through a precise project to enhance native varieties and regions with a greater vocation for winemaking, we have added Capofaro in Salina in the Aeolian archipelago, Tascante on Mount Etna, Whitaker in Mozia in the province of Trapani, and Sallier de La Tour in the Monreale Doc, each with its own story to write, each with a different Sicily to tell. Our greatest challenge now is to preserve these places to leave our children a better environment, with constant attention to the safeguarding of each individual ecosystem.
THE PHILOSOPHY
Let's respect the earth and its rhythms.
We cultivate the vineyard in five different estates in Sicily – Regaleali, Capofaro, Tascante, Whitaker, and Sallier de La Tour – each with its own characteristics. Different soils and climates span the entire island, giving rise to a long harvest season that begins in mid-August and concludes between the end of October and the beginning of November. For generations, men and women have worked alongside us to help keep pace with the seasons. We tell the story of Sicily and its products through a cooking school where the raw materials dictate the calendar. Alongside the vineyards, our fields grow olive trees, wheat, and almond trees, gardens, pastures, and orchards, each with its own time because in our world, nature is not in a hurry.
