THE FAMILY
Grapes are not just the base of a good wine; they are its essence, its soul, its character. They adapt to the rhythms of nature, conform to the land that nurtures them, and are shaped by the hand of the farmer. Cultivating the land is an ancient craft, infused with traditions and distant times. For seven generations, the family... SperiThey started the activity of winemakers in Valpolicella. Times change, but the old values remain, just as the pride of being part of an extraordinary land like Valpolicella Classica remains, along with the moral duty to tell its story through these wines.
Historic family of Valpolicella, the company Speri It is an authoritative and faithful interpreter of the wines of Valpolicella Classica, which, due to its continuity and strong connection to the territory, has become a point of reference in Italian winemaking.
The history of the company begins in the first half of the 1800s with a few hectares adjacent to the family home. Speri. Over the years, the company has invested in acquiring new properties in the most suitable areas of Valpolicella Classica, reaching 60 hectares today. Times change and the dimensions grow, but family management remains, proudly reaching the seventh generation today.
THE ORGANIC CERTIFICATION
Starting from the belief that the quality of a wine is determined in the vineyard, the family Speri He has worked over the years to preserve and promote the fertility of the land, cultivating only native clones and also preserving historical varieties at risk of extinction, in respect of the biodiversity of the territory. The long experience of winemakers and the continuous search for quality have led us to a viticulture that is particularly attentive to tradition and the environment.
The "open inclined pergola" cultivation system best expresses the local varieties and promotes optimal sun exposure, especially in hilly areas.
To reduce yields in the vineyard, we practice cover cropping and do not use fertilization. Additionally, we regularly carry out operations of uprooting, pruning, and thinning.
The grapes are hand-picked and carefully selected by skilled hands. In the hillside vineyards, the company has chosen to preserve the historic dry stone walls, the so-called "marogne," instead of resorting to land clearing. For years, the company has also been applying the principles of sustainable agriculture and, starting from from the 2015 harvest, after the conversion phase, obtains the organic certification.
The aim is to maximize the natural balance of the agro-ecosystem by implementing practices that combine knowledge of ecology, plant physiology, biochemistry, and insect behavior.
Examples include the permanent grassing of the entire surface, which ensures the presence of organic matter, the composting of pruning and winemaking residues that returns part of its products to the environment, and the control of the main vine pest, the grape moth, through the modern technique of sexual confusion.
THE VINEYARDS
The company's properties are all located in Valpolicella Classica (historical area) in the most suitable areas, at an altitude ranging from 150 to 350 meters, with a remarkable variety of soils and microclimates.
In order to better express these micro-zones, we vinify separately the grapes from the most important vineyards, creating prestigious Crus that take their name from their vineyard of origin.
The hill vineyards are cultivated on terraces made up of dry stone walls, also known as "marogne": these not only serve as a valuable tool for improving cultivation on hills but also have a high historical value. For this reason, by safeguarding them, we can say that we have made our small contribution to the enhancement of the territory.
