England

The UK has always been a large consumer of wine, but local production is difficult due to the cold and rainy climate. Recently, warmer summers and the availability of suitable grape varieties have made investing in vineyards more attractive. The Romans were the first to introduce the production of wine and since the Middle Ages, the English market was the main customer for Bordeaux wines and sweet fortified wines, which, unlike normal wine, were not altered by sea transport. The poor local viticulture collapsed with phylloxera.
