Wine in the USA is produced from vines of European origin (Vitis Vinifera) and was produced for the first time in the current territory of New Mexico at the beginning of the 17th century. The development of viticulture stopped with the beginning of the prohibition period between 1919 and 1933. The real rebirth of wine production in the United States and in California first and foremost dates back to the early 1970s. It is currently the fourth-fifth producer in the world . California alone produces 90% of the wine in the United States, followed by Washington state, New York, Oregon and Texas.
