The 'Guidalberto' of the Tenuta San Guido takes its name from the ancestor Guidalberto della Gherardesca, a pioneer of agricultural conversion. It arises from the desire of Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta to use Merlot for the first time in a blend made in the Bordeaux style, combined with Cabernet Sauvignon, which is not used in Sassicaia, providing softness and roundness, offering a product that can be enjoyed even at a young age. After more than twenty years of analysis and experimentation, today it is a wine with a clear temperament that well interprets the style of the winery. A style that seeks aromas and sweetness on the palate, characteristics that Merlot can offer even with a relatively short aging period. Tenuta San Guido, whose name derives from San Guido della Gherardesca who lived in the 13th century, is a historic winery in the area of Bolgheri, located along the Etruscan coast that stretches from Livorno to Grosseto, in the Tuscan Maremma.
Covering a total area of about 2500 hectares, the estate currently has ninety hectares of vineyards, including 75 hectares dedicated exclusively to the production of Sassicaia, which was born from an idea of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who wanted to create a great wine in the Bordeaux style. It was indeed the 1920s when the Marchese, inspired by Bordeaux and the aristocracy of the time, dreamed of producing a wine of pedigree, a true thoroughbred.
Having moved to the Tuscan estate in the second half of the 20th century, Marchese Incisa della Rocchetta began experimenting, planting some cuttings of French grape varieties in an area that had until then been completely unknown from a viticultural point of view. From that moment on, with splendid foresight, Marchese Incisa della Rocchetta was able to understand the potential of the Bolgheri area and the very lands on which he had planted the cuttings, which had unique characteristics, in a microclimate very similar to the Graves and Bordeaux regions.
The first vintage to be marketed was that of 1968, and since then the "Sassicaia" has achieved unexpected worldwide fame, growing year by year. In addition to this famous wine, Tenuta San Guido also produces two other labels: the “Guidalberto,” from cabernet sauvignon and merlot grapes, and “Le Difese,” an IGT made from cabernet and sangiovese. With a production that approaches an average of 800,000 bottles per year, Tenuta San Guido deserves much of the credit for the success that the Bolgheri area is experiencing on an international level. A story and a winemaking dimension that is almost unreal, that of Tenuta San Guido, extraordinary and suspended in time, almost mythological.
