THE COMPANY

The winery founded by Enrico Serafino

Cantina Enrico Serafino was founded in 1878 in Canale d’Alba, one of the main towns of the Roero district and a farming centre with a long history that can be traced back to the early Middle Ages.

Established by businessman and landowner Enrico Serafino, the winery soon became one of the most important in Piedmont and among the first to sell the region’s classic wines throughout Italy and abroad.

During the 1990s the production facilities were completely modernised.

Since 2002 the entire production process has been internally monitored and controlled using state-of-the art equipment for pressing, vinification and bottling.

Acquisition of the vineyards and new skills

Starting in 2004, the estate and its wines were subjected to a thorough overhaul, commencing in the vineyards.
  • Quality control: purchase of local vineyards for the production of high-quality grapes and close collaboration with several selected growers in the best areas;
  • Winemaking expertise: the experience of our technical staff and our partnership with oenologist Giuseppe Caviola (commenced in 2005) allow us to valorise our production, with the aim of achieving typical, terroir-true wines. (Project Cantina Maestra).

The estate is characterised by the production of the classic Piedmontese wines of the area, first and foremost Roero, Arneis and Barbera, but also the noble, elegant Barolo and Barbaresco, made from Nebbiolo grown on the neighbouring Langhe hillsides. Alta Langa provides the grapes for the production of extraordinarily characterful, original Metodo Classico sparkling wines.

The old winery covers an area of 6000 square metres and houses modern vinification equipment alongside large and small barrels for ageing the wines. There are also areas dedicated to history and tradition, which display old vineyard implements and cellar equipment. The underground cellars are the most evocative area of the winery, with a constant temperature of around 14° C, used for the production of the Metodo Classico sparkling wines. They are pervaded by a magical atmosphere of tradition and patient waiting for an ageing process that only time and the painstaking care of man can assure.
