The Bolgheri DOC "Cont'Ugo", Tenuta Guado al Tasso, by Antinori is the result of a careful selection of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc vinified in steel and then aged for a year in oak barrels. It 'a wine characterized by a' more vertical approach than usual, with a slight final acidic, and a 'harmonious and complex aromas. The nose has notes of cherry in alcohol, tobacco, candied orange and spices. The palate is vibrant, soft and persistent with a spicy aftertaste. This year we have a greater presence of Merlot and non-use of the Petit Verdot, for a different blend than usual: 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.
The 2014 was atypical year for the Bolgheri area, especially during the summer. The abundant rainfall and temperatures below average for the month of July and August in part, have required major interventions of defoliation and thinning in order to ensure that a proper ripening of the grapes. From the middle of August the climate is improved to make it a mild return after mid-September rebalancing, at least in part, the vintage year.
The harvest began on September 10th with the Merlot and ended in early October with the Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes were selected in two moments: immediately after harvest and after de-stemming, to ensure that only those ripe arrived inside the fermentation tanks. As each vintage, we have been divided individual plots of vineyard in many small collection fees according to the vintage weather pattern, distinguishing them by characteristics of the grapes and vinificandole separately. Fermentation and maceration took place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature for 15/20 days. After the process of racking, the wine was racked directly into barriques, where he finished the malolactic fermentation. At the end of the first year of aging in new French oak, the wine was blended to return for a further six months in small barrels before bottling.
Guado al Tasso Estate is located near Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, 96 kilometers (60 miles) to the southwest of Florence. The 300 hectares (750 acres) planted to vineyards on the property are in the center of the so-called” Bolgheri amphitheater”: rolling hillsides which surround a splendid plain which slopes gently towards the sea and create a micro-climate with unique characteristics. Guado al Tasso, the flagship wine of the estate, expresses all of the force and suppleness of this corner of the upper Maremma. It has contributed to raise Bolgheri to the level of the most important areas of Europe’s viticulture, expressing a decisively Mediterranean character of power, elegance, and balance.
