In 1750, the Echenique family chose to emigrate to Chile, abandoning the Basque Country. Immediately, near the town of Peralillo, in the province of Colchagua, the Echenique began to breed vineyards, and from 1877 also exported their wines to Europe. In 1988, the winery was purchased by the Rothschild-Lafite family, which renamed the "Los Vascos" estate, in honor of the Basque founders. The Rothschild-Lafite, formerly proprietors in France of the Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite, chose to purchase the Chilean company, with over two thousand hectares of which 500 vines, for precise reasons. At 130 meters of altitude and only 40 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, with dry and calcareous soils, particularly suited to the cultivation of Bordeaux varieties, and with secure water supply in case of need, the "Los Vascos" estate brings together all the the best qualities of the Chilean terroir, which, embellished by the know-how of European winemaking, is able to guarantee today the production of exclusive and delicious wines.
